Stop Choosing the Wrong Game
I see it every day. A novice trainer downloads Run & Bun because the graphics look nice, gets wiped by the first gym leader, and quits the hobby. Do not be that statistical outlier.
I have categorized the major ROM hacks into 5 distinct Tiers based on required game knowledge and strategic depth. Choose your curriculum wisely.
Tier 0: Vanilla+ (The Playground)
Requirement: You know the type chart.
These games are slightly harder than official games, but you can beat them by just leveling up. No complex strategies needed.
- Pokemon Gaia
- Pokemon Unbound (Vanilla Difficulty)
- Pokemon Glazed
Tier 1: Enhanced (The Exam)
Requirement: You understand Items and Abilities.
Gym leaders have better teams. You might need to change your team for a specific fight. "A-mashing" will get you punished.
- Pokemon Unbound (Difficult)
- Renegade Platinum (The gold standard of this tier)
- FireRed Omega
Tier 2: Competitive (The Gauntlet)
Requirement: You understand EVs, IVs, and Team Synergy.
These games assume you play competitive Pokemon (Smogon tiers). Bosses have perfect IVs and held items. You need a balanced team with walls, sweepers, and pivots.
- Radical Red (Normal Mode)
- Inclement Emerald
- Pokemon Unbound (Insane)
Tier 3: Hardcore (The Filter)
Requirement: You can calculate damage ranges in your head.
The AI cheats (reads your inputs or has unfair advantages), or the game restricts you heavily (no items, level caps). One mistake = Wipe.
- Radical Red (Hardcore Mode)
- Vintage White
Tier 4: Kaizo (The Abyss)
Requirement: Precise documentation and 100+ attempts.
These are puzzle games disguised as Pokemon. Every battle has a "correct" answer. If you don't find it, you lose. For masochists only.
- Run & Bun
- Emerald Kaizo
- Invictus
Redwood's Advice
Start at Tier 1. Renegade Platinum is the perfect bridge between casual play and competitive thinking. Do not jump to Tier 3 unless you enjoy pain.
