Why You Should Use Rare Candies (And Why It's Not Cheating)

"Is using Infinite Rare Candies cheating? Prof. Redwood uses logic to destroy the 'Grinding = Skill' argument forever."

The "Purist" Trap

I hear it constantly in the academy. "Professor, if I use Rare Candies, I didn't earn the win."

Nonsense. Let us analyze this logically. What skill is tested when you kill 500 wild Audinos to level up? Patience? Boredom tolerance? It is not strategic skill. It is merely a function of time properly wasted.

"If grinding was skill, speedrunners would be the worst players." — Prof. Redwood

The Resource That Matters: Time

In modern difficulty hacks like Radical Red or Drayano hacks, the challenge comes from:

  • Team Building: Picking the right 6 Pokemon for your matchup
  • Move Selection: Coverage, priority, status moves
  • Damage Calculation: Knowing you live an Earthquake at 80% HP
  • AI Prediction: Will Cynthia switch to Milotic? Can you set up?

None of these require you to run in circles in the grass for 3 hours.

Modern Hacks WANT You To Skip Grinding

ROM HackBuilt-In Anti-Grind Feature
Pokemon UnboundSandbox Mode (Infinite Items, Rare Candies)
Radical RedMinimal Grinding Mode + EV/IV NPCs
Inclement EmeraldLevel Scaling + Free Rare Candies
Renegade PlatinumExp. All from start, Trainers give boosted EXP

The developers explicitly provide these options. They want you to focus on the battle, not the grind.

Redwood's Rule: The Ethics Framework

If you are playing with Level Caps (which you should be), Rare Candies are ethical.

Using a candy to hit the Level 15 cap before Brock is efficient. Using a candy to overlevel to 25 and stomp him is cheating. The constraint is the Level Cap, not the method of reaching it.

The Cheat Code Decision Tree:

  1. Does the hack have Level Caps? → Use Rare Candies freely up to the cap.
  2. Does the hack have a "Minimal Grinding" option? → Enable it. The creator intended this.
  3. Are you playing a Nuzlocke? → Candies are fine; your Pokemon can still die.
  4. Are you trying to overlevel and one-shot everything? → That is cheating. Stop.

FAQ

Won't my Pokemon have less EVs if I use candies?

Most modern hacks give you access to EV training items (Vitamins, Power items) or NPCs that set EVs directly. In Radical Red, you can literally buy perfect EVs. Grinding wild Pokemon for "EV gains" is also outdated.

Is using Rare Candies allowed in Nuzlockes?

Yes. Standard Nuzlocke rules only restrict item use in battle. Using candies to level outside of battle is universally accepted. Your Pokemon can still die permanently.

The community says it's cheating...

The community also said mGBA was unnecessary. The community is frequently wrong. Trust the game designers who put the feature in.

Respect your time, student. The real test begins when the battle starts.
