LOG ENTRY: REGION ZEI
Location: Unknown Coordinates (Ruby Engine Architecture)
Current Pokedex Status: 202/???
Mental State: Agitated due to linguistic barriers.
I have touched down in the Zei Region. My initial scan confirms this environment is built on the antiquated Ruby framework. For the uninitiated, that means we are operating without the modern amenities of the FireRed or Emerald engines. It feels raw. It feels dangerous. It feels like 2004.
THE LANDSCAPE & ANOMALIES
The visual data is... distinct. The architect, Zei, has overhauled the local geography. We aren't in Hoenn anymore. The tilesets have been repainted, offering a fresh coat of paint on a rusty chassis. The auditory signals (music) have also been modulated. Itโs a completely new atmosphere.
However, I encountered a significant decryption hurdle: the local text is entirely in Spanish. While I am fluent in IVs and EVs, my Spanish is limited to "Uno, Dos, Tres, Ball Shake." This complicates the mission. I found myself mashing the A-button through dialogue, hoping I didn't just agree to trade my Starter for a Magikarp.
THE HUNT: LEGENDS OF THE BIRDS
The intelligence brief mentioned a narrative focus on Lugia and Ho-oh. This is where the dopamine hits. The lore seems to revolve heavily around these two titans. I spent hours tracking their signatures.
FIELD NOTE: Missable event warning! Save before entering the cave. The scripting in these older Ruby-based regions can be volatile. If you knock out a static legendary, it might be gone forever. I don't take risks. I save twice.
CATCHABILITY & MECHANICS
Let's talk numbers. The lack of a Physical/Special split is a jarring transition for a modern hunter. My Sneasel is useless here. You have to recalibrate your brain to Gen 3 logic. Itโs painful, but itโs a pure, nostalgic kind of pain.
Is the dex complete? The spawn tables are erratic. I've found species where they shouldn't be. It's chaos. But I can confirm that a Living Dex is possible without cheats, provided you have the patience to grind through the high encounter rates and decipher the Spanish clues on where the Legendaries are hiding.
VERDICT
This isn't a luxury cruise like Unbound. This is a rugged expedition into a custom-built world from a different era. The QoL features are non-existent. No infinite repels. No auto-run. You walk, and you like it. 100% completion took me 85 hours, mostly because I got lost in a cave due to not reading the signposts correctly.
If you are a historian of the ROM hacking scene or a Spanish-speaking operative, this is a fascinating dig site. For the rest of us? It's a grind. But the Pokedex must be filled.
