Pokemon Zaru is a ROM hack set in the familiar region of Kanto. But some things are different. In fact, all the 151 Pokemon are. But there is also one more thing. The region was taken over by the Nazis. And guess who is gonna stop them? Ash Ketchu… I mean, you (the story isn’t meant to be taken too seriously). MISSION LOG: DAY 1 - THE ZARU ANOMALY

Location: Kanto Sector, Alternate Timeline Z-44
Status: Hyper-focused
Pokedex Completion: 0% -> 100% (Target Acquired)

I dropped into the Zaru region expecting a standard Kanto remix. What I found was... unsettling. The local government has been overthrown by a hostile regime that looks suspiciously like historical villains from the 1940s. A bizarre political climate for a creature-collection simulation, but I am not here for politics. I am here for the data. My biological scanners picked up 151 completely undocumented species (Fakemon). My palms are already sweating. If I can't catalogue every single one of these genetic aberrations, this mission is a failure.

THE FAUNA: 151 NEW TARGETS

The standard Kanto 151 have been wiped from existence, replaced by local mutations. I've confirmed that Living Dex is possible without cheats. This is the golden rule of exploration. If I have to input a GameShark code to catch a starter I missed, I consider the timeline corrupted. Here, the ecosystem is self-contained. Every blade of grass holds a potential new entry.

However, the designs vary in genetic stability. Some look like masterful evolutions; others resemble biological mishaps. But a slot in the Dex is a slot in the Dex. I don't judge the art; I judge the capture rate.

LOGISTICS AND QOL

The local infrastructure has some surprising upgrades despite the oppressive regime.

  • Cave Systems: The encounter rates in Mt. Moon and Rock Tunnel have been lowered. This is critical. Nothing ruins a speed-run to 100% like stopping every three steps for a Zubat equivalent.
  • HM Tech: Field moves have been buffed. Cut isn't just a weed whacker anymore; it's a viable combat maneuver.
  • The Economy: Wild entities are frequently holding high-value items. I found Nuggets and Rare Candies on standard encounters. It seems the local fauna is hoarding the region's wealth.

THREAT ASSESSMENT

The difficulty is spiked. The regime's commanders (Gym Leaders) utilize tactics and movesets from future generations (Gen 4+ mechanics detected). Do not expect to sweep with a single over-leveled starter. You need coverage. I nearly wiped to a Commander using advanced stalling tactics.

FIELD NOTE: Missable event warning! Save before entering the cave systems or engaging static sprites. Since these are Fakemon, you do not know their catch rates or if they will struggle to death. I lost a specialized avian specimen because I didn't stock enough Ultra Balls. Don't be me.

MISSION OUTCOME

The narrative is nonsensical—something about Ash Ketchum and the regime—but I ignored the dialogue boxes to focus on the numbers. The region is compact, the goals are clear.

100% completion took me 28 hours. It's a short, frantic sprint compared to the marathons of other regions. If you need a quick dopamine hit of filling a fresh Pokedex without a 100-hour commitment, Zaru serves its purpose. Just ignore the flags on the walls.
