MISSION LOG: DAY 1 - SECTOR: VANIVILLE (GBA PROTOCOL)
Touchdown in the Kalos region, but something is... different. The universe has been flattened. The Z-axis is gone. I’ve entered a dimensional pocket where the entire 3D Kalos infrastructure has been compressed into a Game Boy Advance framework. My Pokedex is vibrating; the neurological itch is starting already. I need to verify if the transition to 2D caused any data loss in the species registry. I don't sleep until I confirm if Zygarde is catchable or if he's just a map tile I can't interact with.
THE CENSUS: 100% OR BUST
I spent the first 12 hours bushwhacking through Route 2. The local fauna (Gen 6) is present and accounted for. Fennekin, Froakie, Chespin—they are all here. However, the distribution is chaotic. I found species that shouldn't be here until post-game appearing in early routes. It disrupts the natural progression, but for a collector? It's a buffet.
FIELD NOTE: Keep your eyes peeled for the shiny sparkles. The shiny rate seems standard, but without the PokeRadar from the original timeline, we are back to full-odds hunting. Prepare for the grind.
My biggest fear was the trade evolutions. In many of these dimensional rifts (ROM hacks), Gengar is locked behind a multiplayer wall that doesn't exist. I checked the local Department Store. Link Cable item is available in Department Store. Huge W. I bought fifty. Alakazam, Machamp, Gengar—you're all coming with me. No slot left behind.
THE MEGA ANOMALY
Headquarters intel suggested Mega Evolution was impossible in this engine. They were wrong. The phenomenon is active, though it behaves strangely. It's triggered via held items during combat, functioning correctly within the limitations of the Emerald engine. It’s not the fluid transformation of the 3D world, but the stat boosts are verified. Seeing a Mega Lucario in pixel art triggers a dopamine release I wasn't expecting.
THREAT LEVEL & NAVIGATION
The region layout is a faithful recreation, but the "Kalos" map on a GBA screen feels claustrophobic. The threat level (difficulty) is erratic. Some Gym Leaders stick to the standard regulations, while others have team compositions that suggest they've been EV training in secret. It's not Kaizo-level sadism, but don't walk into the Elite Four with an under-leveled Vivillon expecting mercy.
WARNING: Corrupted Data detected in the post-game sector. Missable event warning! Save before entering the cave near the Terminus. If you knock out the Legendary entity there, it does not respawn. I almost threw my device into the river.
FINAL LOG: THE LIVING DEX
After scouring every tile of this demake, I can confirm the impossible: Living Dex is possible without cheats. It requires patience, and you have to tolerate some janky music loops, but the roster is complete. 100% completion took me 85 hours. Is it the polished experience of Unbound? No. But for a completionist who needs to see Kalos in 16-bit glory? It satisfies the hunger.
