MISSION LOG: THE GLYPH OBSESSION
Timestamp: 03:45 AM
Location: The Void (Post-Game Hub)
Caffeine Level: Lethal
I don't know what year it is. My Pokedex says 100%, but at what cost? I've just extracted myself from the Pokemon The Unown King simulation, and I need to document this before the hallucinations set in. This wasn't just a badge run; this was an archaeological dig site masquerading as a Hoenn ROM base.
THE POKEDEX: A NUMBERS GAME
Let's cut to the chase—the numbers. You don't play a game called "The Unown King" without expecting to catch an alphabet soup of nightmares. 100% completion took me 85 hours. Why? Because I refused to leave the Ruins until I had a Living Dex of every single letter form. A normal Explorer sees a wall of text; I see capture targets.
The biodiversity here is... esoteric. While the base architecture screams "Emerald," the spawn tables have been rewritten by a madman. You aren't just filling slots; you are decoding a language.
CATCHABILITY & MECHANICS
Here is the breakdown for my fellow completionists who break out in hives if they see a trade evolution:
- Trade Evolutions: Patched. Thank Arceus. I found the workaround items fairly early. Link Cable item is available in Department Store. Huge W. I evolved my Alakazam before the 4th Gym, which is the only way to play.
- The Unown Gimmick: The game forces you to care about Unown. Usually, they are useless box-fillers. Here, they are plot devices. It adds a layer of neurotic stress that I surprisingly enjoyed.
- Shiny Potential: I spent six hours in a dark cave looking for a shiny 'F' Unown (to pay respects). The encounter rates feel standard, so bring patience.
WARNING: Missable event warning! Save before entering the cave with the ancient inscriptions. If you trigger the sequence without the "Decoder" key item, you might lock yourself out of the final legendary encounter. I learned this the hard way and had to reload a save from 4 hours prior.
THE POST-GAME & QOL
The post-game is meaty enough to keep you awake for three days straight. It's not just the Battle Frontier; there are new narrative threads that open up once the "King" is dethroned. However, the QoL features are a mixed bag. While we have the evolution items, the PC box management feels archaic compared to modern standards. Organizing a Living Dex here requires manual labor.
Living Dex is possible without cheats. I have verified this personally. No GameShark required, just grit and an insane amount of Ultra Balls.
FINAL VERDICT
This isn't a casual stroll through Petalburg. It's a grind-heavy mystery dungeon wrapper on the Gen 3 engine. If you ignore the lore, it's a 3/5. If you obsess over filling every slot like I do, it's a fever dream you have to experience.
