Some challenge

The feelings about the very first day of using any Pokemon are back into this hack. Right, just by looking at its name and you can see that. In this name, you are Red again. Waking up from your room in Pallet Town, you are getting so excited because today is the day you receive your first Pokemon! And professor Sam – your neighbor – will be the one who gives you that. Depending on which Pokemon you choose, Sam’s grandson will choose the opposite one and fight you a battle. Heh, this will be so easy since this boy is just a newbie like you. After that battle, you are ready for your own Pokemon journey. Set up everything and go for your dream!

MISSION REPORT: POKEMON THE FIRST DAY

Explorer: DexHunter Ace (LVL. 100)
Region Base: FireRed Sector — Kanto Variant
Status: Beta / Completion Unknown
Date Filed: Post-Expedition, immediate debrief

INITIAL DEPLOYMENT — 00:00:00

Okay. Okay okay okay. Let me just — let me get this out of my system first. I went in with my spreadsheet. I went in with my tracker. I went in with a fully charged device and a dream. I came out 4 hours later staring at what is essentially a reskinned morning in Pallet Town with a name swap on the local Professor. Oak is now "Professor Sam." That's it. That's the regional variant. My hands are still shaking but not from excitement.

THE LANDSCAPE

Kanto. It's Kanto. I know every tile of this place like I know my own Pokedex entries. The terrain here is virtually indistinguishable from the standard FireRed sector — same routes, same structures, same tall grass placement. I was scanning for new areas, hidden paths, anything that would suggest this region had its own identity. I found nothing. The "new plot" mentioned in the mission briefing amounts to a minor dialogue rewrite in the opening sequence. Professor Sam tells you the same things Professor Oak told you, just with a different name tag on his lab coat. Red wakes up. Red picks a starter. Sam's grandson picks the counter-type. You battle. You win. The emotional payload of "the very first day" feeling? I felt nothing except the creeping dread of an empty completion checklist.

POKEDEX ASSESSMENT

This is where I start losing it. There is no expanded Pokedex. No regional forms. No injected species from later generations. The available pool appears to be the standard FireRed national dex — which, fine, I've completed that roster before, I can do it in my sleep. But here's the problem: I found zero evidence that trade evolutions have been patched. No Link Cable item. No alternative evolution stones. No NPC trade workarounds. If you want Alakazam, Machamp, Golem, or Gengar, you are apparently expected to perform the ancient ritual of finding another human being with a cable. In the year we live in. Playing a ROM hack.

CRITICAL COMPLETIONIST FAILURE: No confirmation that a Living Dex is possible without cheats. Trade evolutions appear unpatched. This is a dealbreaker-class anomaly for any serious dex hunter. I repeat — DEALBREAKER CLASS.

I checked the Department Store. I checked every NPC in every town I could reach. No Link Cable item is available in Department Store. Massive L. The opposite of a Huge W. I need to lie down.

QUALITY OF LIFE — OR LACK THEREOF

Let me run through my standard QoL checklist:

  • Infinite Repel System: Absent. You're buying Repels one at a time like it's Generation I and we don't know any better.
  • Reusable TMs: No evidence found. Standard single-use TM economy.
  • Running Shoes from start: Standard FireRed delivery — you get them from your rival's sister. Fine. Not early enough for my taste but I'll survive.
  • EV/IV Checker: Nonexistent as far as I could find.
  • Shiny Rate Modification: None detected. Base FireRed shiny odds of 1/8192. No DexNav. No chain fishing. No Masuda Method infrastructure. Shiny hunting in this region is like trying to find a specific grain of sand on Cinnabar Beach.

Best QoL feature I found? The game boots up. That's it. That's the best one.

THREAT LEVEL & PROGRESSION

The hostile entities are... standard. Gym Leaders are running their original FireRed teams with no apparent AI upgrades, no held items of note, and no expanded movesets. Brock still has a Geodude and an Onix. Misty still has Staryu and Starmie. The threat level is baseline Kanto — which is to say, if you've done this before, you could sleepwalk through it. I almost did. My fingers were on autopilot while my brain was desperately scanning for anything new.

The difficulty is unspecified in the briefing and I can confirm: it feels unspecified in the field too. It's not hard. It's not easy. It's just... FireRed. With Professor Sam.

POST-GAME INVESTIGATION

I need to be honest here. The beta status of this hack made a thorough post-game investigation impossible. I progressed as far as the content allowed and found no evidence of expanded post-game content. No Battle Frontier. No additional legendaries. No mythical event distributions. No hidden areas unlocked after the credits — assuming credits even roll in this build. Post-game is massive? No. Post-game is nonexistent as far as I can tell. I'm being generous by even using the word "post-game" in this section.

Missable event warning! Actually, no — there's nothing TO miss. That might be worse.

ANOMALIES & BUGS

I didn't encounter any catastrophic glitches or Glitch City scenarios during my expedition, which is... something. The ROM is stable. It runs. The text displays correctly. Professor Sam's dialogue doesn't crash the game. But stability without substance is just an empty room that doesn't collapse. Cool. The floor holds. But there's nothing in here.

THE VERDICT — FIELD ASSESSMENT

Look. I have logged over 3,000 hours across ROM hack regions. I have chained for shinies until my vision blurred. I have catalogued every Hidden Grotto in every Unova-based hack that exists. I have opinions. Strong ones.

Pokemon The First Day, in its current state, is a near-vanilla FireRed experience with a professor name change and minor dialogue alterations marketed as a "new plot." 100% completion took me roughly 4 hours — and that's only because I spent 3 of those hours frantically searching for content that doesn't exist. My completion percentage on unique new content sits at approximately 0.3%, and I'm being generous because Sam's name is technically new data.

There is no expanded dex. There are no QoL patches. There are no shiny hunting improvements. Trade evolutions appear unaddressed. The post-game is absent. For a completionist — for someone who lives and breathes percentage points and filled dex slots — this region offers nothing that the base FireRed sector doesn't already provide.

I want to be kind. I can see the creator had a sentimental attachment to that "first day" feeling. I get it. I remember my first day too. But nostalgia doesn't fill a Pokedex, and a name change on a Professor doesn't constitute a new region.

If this hack receives substantial updates — expanded roster, trade evo fixes, actual post-game content, QoL modernization — I'll strap my boots back on and return to the field. Until then, my spreadsheet stays closed on this one.

Explorer DexHunter Ace, signing off. Dex completion: IMPOSSIBLE in current build. Unacceptable.
