LOG ENTRY: GALAR REGION (LOW-RES SECTOR)
Timestamp: 03:00 AM. Caffeine levels critical. Pokedex at 98%. Hands shaking.
I have just extracted myself from the Pokemon Sword and Shield GBA simulation. My mission? To verify if a full Living Dex of the Galar region is viable on the ancient FireRed engine. The results are... overwhelming. We aren't just talking about a texture pack here; this is a full-scale demake attempt. My completionist neuro-receptors are firing on all cylinders, but the simulation is unstable.
THE CATCH: GEN 8 ACQUISITION
The local fauna has been completely overhauled. We are seeing native Galar forms, Generation 8 species, and the heavy hitters like Zacian and Zamazenta roaming the wild. Living Dex is possible without cheats. I repeat: I have secured a Grookey and a Sobble on the same save file. This is not a drill.
However, the biodiversity is dense. You will find overworld encounters cluttering the routes. It makes hunting specific targets easier, but the sheer volume of species packed into these small GBA routes triggers my anxiety. I need order! I need a sorting system!
THE PHENOMENA: DYNAMAX & MEGAS
The region utilizes a strange hybrid technology. Mega Evolution and Dynamaxing coexist, which is scientifically chaotic but mechanically thrilling. To trigger the Dynamax phenomenon (Gigantamax for compatible subjects), one must utilize a Wishing Star and manually engage the sequence (Start Button) during combat. It feels clunky—like hotwiring a Ferrari—but when that sprite expands, the dopamine hits.
FIELD NOTE: Raid Battles are active. They appear as den anomalies scattered across the map. While primitive compared to Switch-grade dens, they are functional for farming resources.
QUALITY OF LIFE & ANOMALIES
Let's talk logistics. The local Department Stores have been upgraded to supply modern Explorer needs. Link Cable item is available in Department Store. Huge W. No need to find a second unit to evolve your Machoke. This is the gold standard for ROM hacks; if I can't evolve it alone, I don't want it.
However, this world is a prototype. The architect (PCL.G) admitted this is their first construction, and it shows. I encountered several visual glitches—let's call them "Reality Tears"—where tiles didn't align or text overflowed the dialogue boxes. It didn't stop the hunt, but it broke immersion. The Exp Share system is the modern "All Party" variant, which significantly reduces the grind time for filling the Dex.
THE VERDICT
Is it the polished gem that Unbound is? No. But is it a functional way to catch Gen 8 mons on a GBA emulator while I'm supposed to be sleeping? Absolutely. The novelty of seeing Galar sprites in 16-bit is strong, but tread carefully around the edges of the map.
100% completion took me 45 hours. It was a manic sprint, but the box organization is finally perfect.
