LOG ENTRY: THE SURI SECTOR
Timestamp: 0300 Hours
Location: Mt. Silver Summit
Pokedex Status: 94% Complete
I haven't blinked in four hours. My eyes are dry, but my hands are steady. I just descended from the summit of Mt. Silver in the SURI region. This expedition was... chaotic. The region claims to be a sequel to the Johto operations (HG/SS), but the terrain is built on a modified FireRed engine. It's a jarring mix of nostalgia and structural instability.
THE CATCHING ENVIRONMENT
Let's talk numbers because numbers don't lie. The biodiversity here is a strange mix of the Crystal era and modern evolution theory. We have the standard Johto fauna, but with the necessary Gen 4 biological patches (Magmortar, Electivire, etc.). Living Dex is possible without cheats. I confirmed this when I snagged a Magby as a starter—yes, you can choose between the Elemental Triad or the Baby Triad (Eevee, Elekid, Magby). I went with Magby. No regrets.
However, the census is capped. Arceus sits at the end of the list, tied to the Unown mythology. It's a neat narrative hook, but it makes the hunt linear. I didn't see a full National Dex expansion, which makes my completionist heart ache slightly, but for a regional excursion, it suffices.
LOCAL TECHNOLOGY (QoL)
The local tech is surprisingly advanced for a region that feels like it's still under construction. The locals have figured out how to synthesize TMs that don't break after one use. Finally. But the crown jewel? Best QoL: Infinite Repel system. It's the Black/White variant—it asks if you want to use another one immediately. This saved me roughly 45 minutes of menu navigation over the course of the journey.
Other critical observations:
- EXP Capture Protocol: Gaining experience while catching specimens is active. This is crucial for maintaining team parity while filling the box.
- HM Deletion: You can wipe HM moves from memory without a Move Deleter. This is huge. HMs are usually a parasitic drain on movesets; here, they are temporary tools.
- The Running Shoes: Pre-equipped. Indoor running enabled. We move fast here.
ANOMALIES AND GLITCHES
I must report a significant barrier to total immersion: The language centers of the local population are severely damaged. The intel warned of "grammar errors," but it's more like a dialect of broken syntax. It makes deciphering mission objectives difficult. I spent ten minutes trying to understand a simple fetch quest because the NPC spoke in riddles and sentence fragments.
Missable event warning! Save before entering the cave. There are new events scripted into this region that don't follow standard Nintendo logic. I nearly soft-locked myself in a dialogue loop near the mid-game. Save often. Save always.
VISUALS AND ATMOSPHERE
Graphically, SURI is punching above its weight. The sprites have been updated to NDS standards—clean lines, better shading. The environment feels vibrant, trying desperately to mimic the HeartGold aesthetic on a GBA framework. It mostly succeeds, though the animated title screen caused some flickering on my handheld device (the archives mention a patch for this, use it).
FINAL LOG
Is it a 100% completion gem? Not quite yet. It feels like a Beta in spirit, even if the League is accessible. The difficulty curve is smoother than vanilla, and the IV/Nature display on the summary screen is a godsend for filtering out trash mobs. 100% completion took me 32 hours. Short, punchy, but rough around the edges.
