INITIAL ASSESSMENT
Okay. OKAY. Deep breaths. Let me tell you about Colen.
I went in expecting a standard FireRed derivative—maybe some palette swaps, a couple new routes, call it a day. What I got was a full-blown refugee crisis narrative with Shadow Crystal radiation lore that actually made me care about why I'm catching Pokemon in this specific patch of digital grass. The Almia connection? The Old Mauville explosion? This region has history, and history means LORE POKEMON. My brain was already calculating which legendaries might be tied to the Shadow Crystal before I even picked my starter.
THE LANDSCAPE
Colen is visually inspired by the Black and White aesthetic, and honestly? It works. The region feels distinct from Kanto and Hoenn despite running on FireRed architecture. The Day/Night system cycles beautifully, and I spent an embarrassing amount of time just watching the transition because certain spawns are time-locked. Missable event warning! Save before entering the cave. I learned this the hard way in the Void Sanctum area—there's a one-time encounter that I almost fumbled because I wasn't paying attention to the clock.
The sideways stairs are a nice touch. Small detail, but it makes the world feel less grid-locked. Hoenn post-game access? That's where things get interesting for completion purposes, but I'll get to that.
POKEDEX VIABILITY ANALYSIS
Here's where I start twitching.
The regional dex includes newer generation Pokemon, which is fantastic for variety. Fairy-types are present and accounted for. The Physical/Special split means my Gyarados finally gets to use Waterfall properly. All standard QoL stuff that should be baseline in 2020+ hacks.
However.
Trade evolutions. The eternal nemesis. I scoured every department store, every hidden vendor, every suspicious NPC who looked like they might be holding contraband evolution items. The verdict? Trade evolution handling is inconsistent. Some species have alternative methods. Others... don't. I'm sitting at 87.3% completion and staring at empty Pokedex slots that mock me. Gengar. Alakazam. The usual suspects.
NOTE: Link Cable item is NOT confirmed available in standard shops. Alternative evolution methods exist for SOME trade Pokemon. Check the Colen Underground Market for potential workarounds. Your mileage will vary.
Living Dex is possible without cheats—technically—but you'll need to grind the post-game Hoenn sector and pray to Arceus that the spawn tables cooperate. I'm still hunting for three specific entries that seem locked behind obscure triggers.
QUALITY OF LIFE INFRASTRUCTURE
Reusable TMs. Yes. Good. This is the bare minimum and Saiph delivers.
The new Bag UI is cleaner than base FireRed, which matters when you're juggling 47 different held items for breeding optimization. Day/Night affecting spawns adds depth to hunting routes.
What's missing? Best QoL: Infinite Repel system. Saiph doesn't have this. Every time my Repel wore off in a cave, I died a little inside. The Repel notification exists, but auto-renewal? Nope. My finger developed a callus from manually reapplying.
No DexNav equivalent either. Shiny hunting is pure random encounters—old school odds, old school patience. I respect the grind, but modern hunters will feel the friction.
THREAT LEVEL ASSESSMENT
Team Void operates with actual menace. Their connection to the Shadow Crystal creates genuine stakes, and their Pokemon aren't pushovers. Gym Leaders use competitive-adjacent movesets—expect coverage moves, expect held items, expect to lose your first attempt if you're not prepared.
The difficulty curve is steady but spikes hard around the sixth badge. I had to grind an extra four levels just to survive the Electric-type specialist because they were running a Rain Dance team with Swift Swim Kingdra support. In a GYM. The audacity.
Post-game Hoenn access introduces higher-level wild Pokemon, which is perfect for training but rough if you stumble in unprepared.
POST-GAME EVALUATION
The Hoenn sector is where completionists will spend their time. Accessing the irradiated zones, hunting down Shadow Crystal-related legendaries, and filling those last Pokedex slots. It's substantial content—not Battle Frontier substantial, but more than a token gesture.
POST-GAME NOTE: Post-game is massive. Battle Frontier included. CORRECTION: No Battle Frontier confirmed. I repeat, no Battle Frontier. The post-game is story-driven with legendary hunts. Adjust expectations accordingly.
The narrative payoff for the Shadow Crystal arc is satisfying. Darkrai's involvement makes sense given the Almia lore. But if you're here purely for competitive post-game facilities? You'll be disappointed.
ANOMALY LOG
Minor graphical glitches in two cave systems—tile layering issues that don't affect gameplay but hurt my eyes. One NPC in Colen City repeats dialogue infinitely if you talk to them from the wrong angle. No game-breaking bugs encountered during my 38-hour expedition, which is more than I can say for some "completed" hacks.
The 2020 patch appears stable. I've heard rumors of earlier versions having softlock issues, but I can't confirm—my playthrough was clean.
FINAL FIELD NOTES
Pokemon Saiph is a competent, story-driven hack with genuine ambition. The Colen region has personality. The Shadow Crystal narrative gives weight to your journey. The QoL features are present but not exceptional.
For completionists? It's a mixed bag. The dex is achievable but requires patience and potentially some trade evolution workarounds that feel like half-measures. No shiny hunting optimizations. No infinite repels. No DexNav.
100% completion took me 85 hours—wait, no. I'm at 87.3% after 38 hours and I can feel the remaining 12.7% laughing at me from whatever obscure corner of Hoenn they're hiding in. Estimated full completion: 50+ hours if you're thorough.
Is the Living Dex possible? Yes. Will you suffer? Also yes. But that's the job.
- Strengths: Original story, solid region design, stable build, meaningful post-game content
- Weaknesses: Incomplete trade evolution solutions, no modern shiny hunting methods, missing advanced QoL features
- Verdict: Worth the expedition for story-focused players. Completionists should prepare for some frustration.
DexHunter Ace, signing off. I have three empty Pokedex slots and a spreadsheet that needs updating.
Current Status: Hunting. Always hunting.
