MISSION REPORT: PERIWINKLE SECTOR - BLOBBOS ANOMALY
Explorer: Old Man Earl (LVL. 81)
Region: Kanto (Alternate Timeline Designation: "Periwinkle")
Hardware: Flashcart on original GBC hardware
Status: Expedition Aborted - Hostile Territory
INITIAL APPROACH
I loaded this cartridge expecting a return to the glory days. The intel mentioned Kanto. It mentioned a Yellow base ROM. My old heart got excited. Finally, a hack that respects the classics, I thought.
I was a fool.
THE LANDSCAPE
What greeted me was not the Kanto I remember. The region has been... infected. Every Pikachu - every single one - has been replaced by something called a "Blobbos." It looks like someone drew a creature on a napkin after too many drinks at the Celadon Game Corner. The sprite work is not faithful to Gen 3 style. It is not faithful to ANY style I recognize.
The visual landscape is cluttered with what I can only describe as "internet humor" from a decade I'd rather forget. Hostile entities include references to former United States presidents. I did not ask for this. Nobody asked for this.
FIELD NOTE: If you see a creature that looks like it belongs in a cursed image folder, you have entered the correct region. Turn back.
REGIONAL PHENOMENA
The local Fakemon population is extensive - 155 documented species. Back in my day, we had 151 and that was PLENTY. These creatures look like Digimon. No, worse. They look like Digimon that were designed by a committee of people who think "random equals funny."
The hack originates from something called "Pokemon Clover," which I have deliberately avoided for years. This is a spin-off of that fever dream. The movesets are reportedly based on "Roaming Red," and the difficulty has been artificially inflated.
Too many modern features ruined the vibe. And by "modern features," I mean whatever this is.
THREAT ASSESSMENT
Difficulty was higher than expected, but not in a satisfying way. It felt like the region was designed to mock me personally. The Battle Tent from Anniversary Red has been imported - that's actually a solid piece of local technology. But it's buried under layers of... whatever this is trying to be.
The story is set before Clover, featuring a new protagonist. I cannot comment on narrative quality because I was too busy being confused by a Fakemon that appeared to be a sentient meme from 2014.
HARDWARE COMPATIBILITY
It runs on real hardware. I'll give it that. The scanlines were present. The chiptune music was... modified. Not unpleasant, but not the pure nostalgia I crave.
WARNING: This is not a Vanilla+ experience. This is Vanilla that fell into a vat of radioactive internet culture.
FINAL ASSESSMENT
I came looking for 1999. I found 2014 4chan instead.
No gimmicks, just good Pokemon - that's what I wanted. What I got was ALL gimmicks and zero of the Pokemon I actually recognize. What is a 'Mega' evolution? Sounds broken. Well, this hack doesn't have those, but it has something worse: self-awareness that thinks it's funnier than it is.
This expedition was not for me. It was never going to be for me. The Clover lineage is for a different breed of Explorer - younger, more tolerant of chaos, possibly raised on energy drinks and irony.
For those Explorers: the hack appears complete, functional, and has genuine effort behind it. The Battle Tent integration is competent. The increased difficulty is real.
For Explorers like myself who just want to beat the Elite Four without encountering a Pokemon that looks like a rejected mascot for a discontinued snack food: stay far, far away.
- Anomalies Detected: The entire region is an anomaly
- Glitch Cities: None observed - technically stable
- Running Shoes Inside Houses: Unknown - I didn't stay long enough to check
Old Man Earl, signing off. I need to go play Crystal Clear to cleanse my palate.
