🍄 MISSION LOG: MARIO RED & LUIGI GREEN 🍄
Day 1, Hour 0 - Somewhere in the Mushroom Kingdom (formerly Pallet Town)
Okay so I booted this up expecting another lazy reskin where Pikachu has a mustache and we call it a day. Instead I got absolutely BODIED by a Goomba with Earthquake. This game is absolutely unhinged 💀
THE LANDSCAPE
The regional architecture has been completely overhauled - we're talking full Mushroom Kingdom energy. The sprites? Actually kinda clean??? Like someone put EFFORT into making 151 Mario characters into functional creatures and I'm lowkey impressed. Every single mon from the original Kanto dex has been replaced with something from the Mario universe. Bowser, Shy Guys, those weird Chain Chomps - they're all here and they all have custom movesets that actually make sense.
The two-version system (Mario Red vs Luigi Green) changes your protagonist, rival, AND the professor. That's more commitment than I put into literally anything in my life. Version exclusives exist but apparently you can still catch 'em all in one save? Based game design honestly.
FIELD NOTE: Every HM can be taught to any creature. The creator literally said "I don't want my art to become an HM Slave" and that's the most valid thing I've read in a ROM hack description since Vietnam Crystal's "TRASHY STROLL is happening!"
HOSTILE ENTITY ASSESSMENT
Gym Leaders hit DIFFERENT here. These aren't your grandma's badge dispensers - they're running actual strategies with Mario-themed teams. The Elite Four? Didn't expect to get my whole squad deleted by Princess Peach but here we are. Threat level is surprisingly legit for what I thought would be a meme hack.
The movesets on these Mario creatures are genuinely thought out. Like someone sat down and said "what moves would a Bullet Bill realistically know" and then gave it a coherent kit. Don't play this seriously. Just don't. You'll start analyzing Koopa Troopa's base stats and that's when you've lost yourself.
ANOMALY REPORT
Surprisingly stable??? No crashes, no Bad Eggs, no MissingNo encounters. My emulator survived the whole expedition which is honestly disappointing. Where's the chaos? Where's the sprite corruption? This is TOO polished for a Mario crossover hack and I don't know how to feel about it.
The dialogue is functional - not Vietnam Crystal levels of brainrot but not boring either. It knows what it is. It's a Mario Pokemon game. It doesn't try to be deep. Respect.
EXPEDITION SUMMARY
Look, I came in expecting Clover-tier absurdity or at least some Snakewood-level fever dream energy. What I got instead was... a genuinely solid crossover hack? The Fakemon designs are fire (literally - there's a Fire Flower mon that goes crazy). Every Mario character translates surprisingly well into the Pokemon battle system.
Is this the weirdest hack I've ever seen? Nah. Is it the trashiest? Absolutely not. But it's got that specific energy of "someone loved this project and it shows" which is rare in the crossover hack space. The fact that it's COMPLETE and not abandoned at the third gym is already a W.
- Full 151 roster replacement ✓
- Custom movesets that aren't garbage ✓
- Two actual different versions ✓
- HM slavery abolished ✓
- My emulator didn't explode (unfortunate) ✓
FINAL FIELD NOTE: If you want unhinged chaos, go play Snakewood. If you want a surprisingly competent Mario-Pokemon fusion that respects both source materials, this is your jam. I'm giving it points for actually being finished because do you KNOW how rare that is???
Now if you'll excuse me I need to go find a hack that actually crashes my phone. This one was too stable and I feel weird about it. 🍄✨
