MISSION REPORT: POKEMON LIFE VERSION
Explorer: DexHunter Ace (LVL. 100)
Region Codename: Life Version Sector
Base Coordinates: FireRed Framework
Build Analyzed: Alpha 1.9
Field Time Logged: 12 hours, 47 minutes (expedition terminated prematurely)
INITIAL CONTACT
Okay. OKAY. Let me just— let me collect myself here because I went into this region with my spreadsheet ready, my shiny counter app open, and my completion tracker primed for another 80+ hour marathon. What I got instead was a fascinating archaeological dig into what could have been.
The moment I materialized in this new region, I noticed the upgraded visual landscape immediately. Animated sprites. DAY AND NIGHT CYCLES. My heart rate spiked. You know what day/night events mean? Time-locked encounters. My favorite kind of obsessive cataloguing.
But then I hit the first Blue Crystal.
THE CRYSTAL SAVE PHENOMENON
CRITICAL FIELD NOTE: This region has ELIMINATED free saving. You save at Blue Crystals or you don't save at all. Additionally, fainting equals EXPEDITION TERMINATION. Permadeath-adjacent mechanics detected.
Listen. I've done Nuzlockes. I've done hardcore randomizers. But combining restricted save points with a faint-equals-game-over system in a region I'm trying to 100%? My left eye started twitching at hour 3. Every wild encounter became a risk assessment. Every trainer battle required backup healing items I couldn't always afford.
For shiny hunters? Missable event warning! Save before entering the cave. Actually, save before entering ANYTHING. That rare spawn you're soft-resetting for? Better hope there's a Crystal nearby or you're gambling hours of progress on RNG.
POKEDEX ANALYSIS
The regional Pokedex appears to be custom-configured. New entries. The increased shiny rate is a documented phenomenon here— I personally encountered 2 shinies in under 13 hours, which tracks with boosted odds. That's the good news.
The bad news? I cannot confirm whether a Living Dex is possible without cheats because:
- Alpha 1.9 build appears to be the final transmission from this region (last signal: August 2016)
- No evidence of trade evolution alternatives (no Link Cable item spotted in any Department Store— massive L)
- Endgame content status: UNKNOWN. Expedition ended before full regional survey.
I checked every mart I could access. I talked to every NPC. No Link Stone. No trade evolution workaround. If you want that Gengar or Alakazam, you might be stuck in incompletion purgatory. My Pokedex completion percentage at expedition end: approximately 23%. And I don't know if 100% is even ACHIEVABLE.
QUALITY OF LIFE ASSESSMENT
The Physical/Special split is active— regional technology has been updated to modern standards there. B&W music integration gives the soundscape a distinct atmosphere. Moves and abilities have been refreshed.
But here's where my obsessive brain starts screaming:
- No infinite Repel system detected. Manual reapplication required.
- Save restriction actively hostile to completionist methodology.
- No DexNav or equivalent chaining system. Shiny hunting method: pure random encounters with boosted odds. Functional but primitive.
- Day/Night events exist but documentation is sparse. Which Pokemon appear when? I started building my own spreadsheet from scratch.
THREAT LEVEL & EXPEDITION VIABILITY
Hostile entities proved moderately dangerous, amplified significantly by the permadeath-adjacent save system. Standard trainer battles become high-stakes encounters. Gym Leaders— the ones I reached— use competent teams but nothing that screamed "advanced tactics" to my veteran sensibilities.
The real threat is the ALPHA STATUS. This region was abandoned mid-construction. I encountered no game-breaking anomalies personally, but the infrastructure feels incomplete. Post-game? Cannot confirm. Battle Frontier? No evidence. Full Pokedex catchability? Unverified and likely impossible.
EXPEDITION ASSESSMENT: This region shows remarkable ambition— new landmass, custom Pokedex, innovative (if punishing) save mechanics, visual upgrades. But Alpha 1.9 appears to be a frozen moment in time. Development signals ceased in 2016. For a completionist, this is a tomb, not a playground.
FINAL FIELD NOTES
I wanted to love this. The bones are here for something special. Animated sprites made encounters feel alive. The day/night system had me planning expeditions around the in-game clock. The new region geography kept me genuinely curious about what lay ahead.
But I can't recommend this for my fellow Pokedex completionists. Not in this state. 100% completion took me— well, it didn't take me anything, because I don't believe 100% completion is currently possible. That empty slot in my tracker? It's going to haunt me.
If you're a casual explorer who wants to experience an interesting alternate region with some experimental mechanics and you DON'T care about filling every Pokedex slot? You might find something worthwhile here. For 10-15 hours, it's a curious expedition.
For me? For someone who needs that 100%? This region is a beautiful, incomplete fossil. And fossils don't count toward Living Dex completion.
DexHunter Ace, signing off. Pokedex status: INCOMPLETE. Emotional status: DISTRESSED.
