MISSION REPORT: JOHTO LEAGUE SHOWDOWN
Explorer: DexHunter Ace (LVL. 100)
Region Codename: Johto League Showdown
Base Sector: FireRed Architecture
Build Version: Alpha 1.3
Field Time Logged: 12 hours, 47 minutes
INITIAL ASSESSMENT
Okay. OKAY. Deep breaths. Let me explain why my left eye has been twitching for the past six hours.
I entered this region expecting a completionist paradise—the briefing mentioned "all the Pokemon Ash caught in the anime." My brain immediately started calculating: Kanto starters, Johto squad, Heracross, Noctowl, the works. I was ready. Spreadsheet open. Tabs organized. Coffee brewed.
What I found was... an Alpha build. And not the good kind of Alpha where everything's functional but unpolished. The other kind.
POKEDEX VIABILITY ASSESSMENT
This is where my soul left my body.
Missable event warning! Save before entering ANYTHING. I cannot stress this enough. The region's encounter tables are inconsistent at best. Some routes have wild encounters that don't match the anime's timeline. Others have placeholder data. I found a Pidgey where Heracross should've been headbutting trees. A PIDGEY.
FIELD NOTE: Living Dex status = IMPOSSIBLE in current build. Encounter data incomplete. Several species referenced in dialogue but absent from wild tables. This isn't a challenge—it's a structural limitation.
The promise of "catching all of Ash's Pokemon" remains theoretical. I tracked approximately 23% of his Johto roster as actually obtainable through normal gameplay. The rest? Either locked behind unfinished events or simply... not implemented yet.
QUALITY OF LIFE INFRASTRUCTURE
Here's where I started making involuntary noises at my screen.
- Link Cable item: NOT FOUND. Trade evolutions appear untouched from vanilla FireRed. If you want that Machamp, you're SOL or diving into save editors. This is a completionist nightmare scenario.
- Infinite Repel system: Absent. We're manually reapplying Repels like it's 2004.
- Day/Night system: Implemented and functional! This actually works. Time-based encounters exist. One bright spot in the darkness.
- Save points: Standard Pokemon Center protocol. No quick-save anomalies detected.
The hidden cities mentioned in the briefing? I found ONE. It was a single building with an NPC who gave me a Potion. I documented its coordinates but honestly, "hidden city" is generous terminology here.
THREAT LEVEL ANALYSIS
The briefing warned that Team Rocket "has become stronger than ever." Confirmed—but not in a satisfying way. Their Pokemon levels spike erratically. One grunt had a level 15 Rattata. The next had a level 32 Arbok. No scaling logic. No preparation possible. Just chaos.
Gym Leaders follow similar patterns. The difficulty isn't designed; it's accidental. There's a difference between "challenging" and "unbalanced," and this region lives firmly in the latter category.
VISUAL LANDSCAPE
New tiles exist. New sprites exist. Some of them are genuinely charming—the route redesigns show real effort. Ash's overworld sprite captures the anime aesthetic well. But graphical polish means nothing when I can't fill my Pokedex.
The titlescreen is custom. Points for effort. Points immediately deducted because I spent 47 minutes trying to find a shiny hunting method and discovered NONE of the modern conveniences exist here.
CRITICAL NOTE: No DexNav. No chain mechanics. No Shiny Charm equivalent. Shiny hunting in this region would require base 1/8192 odds with no mitigation. I physically cannot recommend this for Shiny Hunters. My completion percentage for shiny viability: 0%.
POST-GAME CONTENT
I... didn't reach post-game. The Alpha build appears to end abruptly after the fourth Gym equivalent. There's no Battle Frontier. There's no extended content. The story simply stops, with a "TO BE CONTINUED" message that felt like a personal attack on my completionist soul.
Estimated completion percentage of advertised content: 35-40%.
ANOMALIES DETECTED
- Text overflow in several NPC dialogues—characters speak beyond their text boxes
- One route transition soft-locked my expedition; required save reload
- Pokemon cries occasionally play the wrong audio file
- Menu lag when accessing the Pokedex (ironic, given my profession)
FINAL EXPEDITION NOTES
Look. I want to love this concept. Playing through Ash's Johto journey? Catching his exact team? That's catnip for someone like me. The bones of something special exist here.
But Alpha 1.3 is not ready for completionist expeditions. This is a proof-of-concept, not a finished region. The creator clearly has vision—the custom assets prove that—but vision without execution leaves my Pokedex at 23% and my stress levels at 400%.
100% completion is currently impossible. Not difficult. Not challenging. Impossible. And for someone who measures their self-worth in Pokedex percentages, that's not a recommendation—it's a warning.
RECOMMENDATION: Bookmark this region. Check back at Version 1.0 or later. The foundation suggests future potential, but current expedition viability is critically low. Do NOT enter expecting a complete journey.
I'm going to go stare at my Unbound Living Dex for emotional support now.
— DexHunter Ace, signing off at 23% regional completion. It haunts me.
