MISSION LOG: JOHTO ADVENTURES – REBIRTH
Explorer: DexHunter Ace (LVL. 100)
Region: Johto Sector (FireRed Infrastructure)
Build: Alpha 2.1
Status: EXPEDITION ABORTED AT 23% COMPLETION
INITIAL ASSESSMENT
Okay. OKAY. Deep breaths. I went into this region with my spreadsheet ready, my catching arm warmed up, and my soul prepared for another 80+ hour grind toward that beautiful 100% marker. What I found instead was... incomplete. Fragmentary. Like someone built half a house and called it "cozy."
This is an Alpha build, folks. Alpha 2.1. I should've known when I saw that designation. But did that stop me? No. Because I'm clinically incapable of seeing an unexplored region and NOT diving headfirst into the tall grass.
THE LANDSCAPE
The Johto reconstruction here follows the anime's third season narrative—you're playing as Ash Ketchum, which immediately raises red flags for my Pokedex brain. Ash's anime team is... limited. The regional cartography features redesigned maps that capture the nostalgic vibe of the original Johto expedition, but with that distinctive FireRed engine underneath.
Encountered the infamous Team Rocket trio (Jessie, James, and their vocally-gifted Meowth) multiple times. Their appearances are scripted to mirror anime events, which is charming if you're here for the story. I am NOT here for the story. I am here for BOXES FULL OF ORGANIZED SPECIMENS.
POKEDEX VIABILITY ANALYSIS
MISSABLE EVENT WARNING! Save before entering... actually, save constantly. This whole region feels unstable.
Here's where my eye started twitching. The catch roster is deliberately restricted to "Pokemon Ash caught in the anime." Do you understand what that means? That means my Living Dex dreams are DEAD ON ARRIVAL. You cannot—I repeat, CANNOT—achieve a complete regional Pokedex because the design philosophy actively prevents it.
Living Dex is possible without cheats? NEGATIVE. Not even close. The specimen availability is narratively locked. If Ash didn't catch it on screen between episodes 117 and 274, you're not getting it here. My spreadsheet is CRYING.
QUALITY OF LIFE INFRASTRUCTURE
Scanned every Pokemart and Department Store in accessible areas. Results:
- No Link Cable item detected in any vendor inventory
- No alternative evolution methods for trade-locked species
- No DexNav or equivalent hunting apparatus
- Repel system: standard, non-infinite
- No shiny hunting enhancements whatsoever
The QoL features that modern expeditions have spoiled me with? Absent. This feels like stepping back to 2008-era ROM territory. No quick Pokemon switching. No reusable TMs. No EV/IV display. I'm operating BLIND out here.
POST-GAME ASSESSMENT
What post-game? The Alpha 2.1 build terminates well before any post-game content could theoretically exist. I hit a wall around the fourth gym equivalent. Progression simply... stops. Whether this is intentional build limitation or an anomaly, I cannot determine.
NOTE: Do not expect completion. This region is under construction. Hard hat required.
ANOMALY REPORT
Multiple instabilities detected:
- NPC dialogue occasionally references events that haven't occurred yet
- Some route transitions feel abrupt—missing connector maps suspected
- Pokemon availability doesn't match stated feature list in all cases
- Version designation (Alpha) confirmed accurate—this is NOT a finished expedition zone
THREAT LEVEL
Difficulty unspecified by regional authorities, and I can confirm it feels... inconsistent. Some trainer battles are trivially easy; others spike unexpectedly. No difficulty selection available. The hostile entity balance suggests this wasn't the development priority.
FINAL CALCULATIONS
Time invested before expedition abort: 6 hours
Completion percentage achieved: 23% (estimated, no in-game tracker)
Pokedex entries possible: Unknown ceiling, severely limited by design
Shiny encounters: 0 (no enhanced methods, standard 1/8192 odds, not worth grinding)
100% completion took me 85 hours? Not here. 100% completion is architecturally impossible in the current build. The region simply doesn't have enough content TO complete.
RECOMMENDATION
If you're an anime nostalgia hunter who wants to relive specific Johto saga moments? Check back in a year. Maybe two. If you're a completionist like me, with that same burning NEED to fill every Pokedex slot? Stay far away. This region will only cause you pain.
The foundation exists for something interesting, but Alpha means Alpha. This is a construction site, not a finished expedition. My spreadsheet remains tragically empty, and I'm going to go stress-catch some Bidoof in Unbound to recover.
