LOCATION: The Region of Summerty
HARDWARE: GameBoy Advance SP (Cobalt Blue, Front-lit)
I packed my bags for the Summerty region expecting a nice vacation. The brochure promised a land recovering from a civil war, which usually means cheap potions and desperate shopkeepers. Perfect for a retiree on a pension. But let me tell you, this expedition was more confusing than trying to link a GameBoy Color to a printer without the right cable.
ARRIVAL IN SUMMERTY
The first thing I noticed was the noise. Back in my day, we didn't need a soap opera to justify catching a Pidgey. We had a Professor, a rival who smelled later, and a dream. Here? We have the "Lancaster Dynasty," a King, his brother Snow, and a rebel group called... "Mockingjay"? I nearly dropped my canteen. It sounds like someone watched too many movies from the 2010s and decided to shove them into a FireRed cartridge. Too many modern features ruined the vibe. I'm here to battle Gym Leaders, not navigate a teenage dystopian novel.
THE LOCAL DIALECT (ANOMALIES)
I have to address the elephant in the roomโor rather, the Donphan. The locals here speak a dialect that is barely intelligible. The mission briefing mentioned a King who "cannot remain his kingdom as good as it used to be." I spent half my time trying to decipher what the NPCs were yelling about. It felt like trying to read a CoroCoro magazine scan without a translator. If you're looking for a coherent narrative, you're going to need a strong pair of reading glasses and a lot of patience.
NOTE: Do not rely on local signage for directions. The grammar is a hostile entity in itself.
VISUALS AND MECHANICS
Now, credit where credit is due. The region itself doesn't look half bad. The sprite work is faithful to Gen 3 style, mostly. It doesn't hurt my eyes like those 3D models the kids play with these days. The trees look like trees, and the grass looks like grass. That's all I ask for.
However, the combat reports mentioned "new battle mechanics" and "new moves." I saw a few attacks I didn't recognize from the Indigo Plateau handbook. I tried to just use Body Slam on everything, but apparently, that's not "optimal" anymore. What is a 'Mega' evolution? Sounds broken. I didn't see any of those flashy transformations here yet, thank goodness, but the mere threat of "new abilities" makes me clutch my Lucky Egg tighter.
THE VERDICT
This expedition is clearly in its early stages (Beta 1). It's rough around the edges, the script needs a complete overhaul by someone who passed 4th-grade English, and the story tries too hard to be epic when it should just focus on being fun. It doesn't have that polished feel of the golden era. It feels like a bootleg cart you'd find at a flea market in 2002โinteresting, but likely to delete your save file.
I'm packing up camp. Call me when the locals learn to use a spellchecker and the King stops whining about his brother.
