LOG ENTRY: 0730 HOURS - LITTLEROOT TOWN (OR IS IT?)
I woke up in a moving truck again. My back aches. Why can't we ever start an adventure in a comfortable armchair? I stepped out into Littleroot Town, but it felt... different. The air was crisper. The buildings had that fancy 3D depth that makes my eyes water. I checked my mapโit's the Hoenn region, alright, but it's been terraformed using technology from the Unova sector (Base: Pokemon White).
I fired up my Pokedex, fearing the worst. I expected to see keys jingling or garbage bags with eyes. But to my surprise, the readings stopped at 386. No gimmicks, just good Pokemon. No fairies, no weird alien beasts. Just the original 386 critters, exactly as Arceus intended. It brought a tear to this old explorer's eye.
THE TERRAIN: FAMILIAR YET FANCY
The geography is undeniably Hoenn, but with a fresh coat of paint. The locals have renovated the tilesets. The sprite work is faithful to Gen 3 style, but sharper. It doesn't hurt my eyes like those neon-colored regions the kids play these days. However, I did notice a strange anomaly: the region only allows for male protagonists. Back in my day, we had Crystal and we liked having options! But I suppose if you're just here to battle, it doesn't change the price of Potions.
NOTE: Do not be alarmed by the dual-screen device. It's excessive technology, but the bottom screen helps organize the bag. I still prefer a rucksack.
COMBAT ANALYTICS
Here is where this expedition gets interesting. While the world looks like 2002, the battle mechanics are updated. The movesets actually make sense. My Pokemon are hitting with the right stats. It's a relief. Finally, a hack that respects the classics without keeping the bugs and broken mechanics of the GameBoy era. The difficulty is reasonableโgym leaders aren't trying to cheese you with unfair advantages, they just fight hard.
THE VERDICT
I spent hours wandering these routes. I didn't see a single Mega Evolution. What is a 'Mega' evolution? Sounds broken. And I'm glad it's not here. This is a pure experience. It's Hoenn, but running on an engine that doesn't require a worm light to see. If you want to relive the glory days without the clunkiness of the old cartridges, this is a solid expedition.
- Pros: Only 386 Pokemon, Hoenn Map in Gen 5 engine, updated moves.
- Cons: Forced gender selection, music sounds a bit 'compressed' compared to the trumpets I remember.
