ARRIVAL IN HEIWA
I dusted off the old Flashcart for this one. They told me the Heiwa region was a tropical paradise, inspired by some place called "PokeCommunity". Sounds like a lot of noise to me. I prefer the quiet of Pallet Town. But HQ insisted I scout this area, claiming it had that classic Generation 3 charm I’m always shouting about. So, I packed my potions and touched down.
First impressions? It's bright. Too bright. The sun here beats down harder than a Groudon drought. But I admit, the visual landscape is clean. The sprite work is faithful to Gen 3 style. None of that 3D nonsense that hurts my eyes. It looks like the FireRed engine, but they've slapped a fresh coat of paint on it to make it feel more like the Hoenn expeditions of my 40s.
THE LOCAL WILDLIFE
HQ intel stated there are 384 species here, spanning six generations. I nearly dropped my Pokedex. Back in my day, we had 151 Pokemon, and we were happy! I ran into some creatures I didn't recognize—floating swords, ice cream cones... absolute madness. I tried to catch a Pidgey and ended up with something that looked like a bird wearing a wrestling mask.
NOTE: Local trainers are using "Updated Battle Mechanics". My Snorlax got hit by a move I’ve never heard of. Keep your type chart handy, or you'll end up blacking out before lunch.
NAVIGATION AND TERRAIN
The locals claim the journey is "non-linear". I call it getting lost. I spent three hours wandering around looking for the next Gym because the path wasn't a straight line. I miss the linearity of Kanto. You beat Brock, you beat Misty, you move on. Here, you have to actually think about where you're going. It's exhausting for an old explorer.
However, I did find a Dive spot. Finally, a hack that respects the classics. There is something peaceful about going underwater where the modern world can't bother you. The music down there—and across the region, actually—is surprisingly catchy. Not the classic chiptunes I grew up with, but these custom tracks don't make my ears bleed like some of those dubstep remixes the young whippersnappers put in their games.
THE ANOMALIES
This region is marked as "Beta 1.0". In my time, that meant "don't touch it until it's finished," but the world has changed. The region feels mostly stable, though I sensed a few glitches in the matrix—tiles that didn't quite line up, or text that scrolled a bit too fast. It lacks the polish of a Nintendo seal of quality, but it functions.
They've also built a "Battle Maison". I took one look at it and walked away. I don't need endless battles for BP. I need a badge, a Hall of Fame, and a nap.
MISSION DEBRIEF
Heiwa is a mixed bag of Berry Juice. On one hand, it captures that tropical, adventurous spirit of the Hoenn era. On the other, it's cluttered with too many new species and moves. No gimmicks, just good Pokemon. That's all I ask for. This place has the good Pokemon, but it brought all their weird cousins along too.
If you have the patience for a "non-linear" trek and don't mind looking up what a "Fairy type" is on your fancy smartphone, you might survive. As for me? I'm going back to Kanto. These Running Shoes are killing my feet.
