MISSION REPORT: POKEMON HEAVEN
Explorer: DexHunter Ace (LVL. 100)
Region: Heaven Region (FireRed Sector)
Mission Duration: 12 hours, 47 minutes
Pokedex Completion: 67.3% (INCOMPLETE - SEE BELOW)
INITIAL RECONNAISSANCE
Okay. OKAY. Let me just—let me collect myself here. I went into Heaven expecting, you know, heaven. Pearly gates. Unlimited rare candies falling from the sky. A Living Dex handed to me on a silver platter. What I got was a 2018 beta build that's been frozen in time like a Snorlax blocking Route 12.
The region itself? Visually striking. The tileset work is genuinely impressive—custom buildings, vibrant color palettes, environments that don't look like someone just copy-pasted Pallet Town seventeen times. The landscape has personality. I'll give Lostsouls that much.
But my Pokedex. My POKEDEX. It's sitting at 67.3% and I physically cannot push it higher. This is causing me actual distress.
THE CATCH RATE CATASTROPHE
Here's where my eye started twitching. The regional dex appears to include Pokemon from multiple generations, which—great! Love that! More slots to fill! But the distribution is... chaotic. I found myself running into the same twelve species for hours while hunting for anything resembling variety.
MISSABLE EVENT WARNING! There's a cave encounter early in the storyline—I won't spoil which one—where you can permanently lock yourself out of a legendary. Save before entering ANY cave in this region. I learned this the hard way at hour 6. Had to restart a backup save from hour 4. Two hours. GONE.
Trade evolutions? No Link Cable item available that I could locate. I checked every Department Store, every mart, every suspicious NPC who looked like they might be hiding evolutionary stones in their pockets. Nothing. This means certain Pokedex entries are functionally impossible without external trading tools. For a completionist? That's not a minor inconvenience. That's a declaration of war.
QOL ASSESSMENT
Let me run through my standard checklist:
- Infinite Repel System: Negative. Manual repel management only. My poor fingers.
- Physical/Special Split: Could not confirm implementation. Movesets felt inconsistent.
- Reusable TMs: Negative. One-and-done. In 2018. Come on.
- Running Indoors: Affirmative. Small mercy.
- Shiny Hunting Methods: Base FireRed odds only (1/8192). No enhanced methods detected. No DexNav. No chain mechanics. Just pure, unfiltered suffering.
The plot Lostsouls crafted shows genuine effort. There's a narrative here that tries to do something different with the Pokemon formula. I appreciated that during the 12.8 hours I spent in this region. But story doesn't fill Pokedex slots, and Pokedex slots are what I NEED.
POST-GAME ASSESSMENT
Post-game is... minimal. After the main storyline concludes, there's limited additional content. No Battle Frontier. No expanded legendary chase. No New Game+ or challenge modes. The credits roll and you're essentially done unless you want to grind wild encounters hoping for that 67.3% to tick upward (spoiler: it won't, because distribution issues).
For context: my average 100% completion run takes 60-85 hours depending on the hack. I hit a hard wall here at under 13 hours. That's not "efficient gameplay." That's "the content ended."
ANOMALY LOG
Encountered several glitches during exploration:
- NPC collision issues in the third town—walked through a building wall twice
- One trainer battle soft-locked on turn 3; required emulator state reload
- Text overflow in several dialogue boxes (minor but noticeable)
Nothing region-breaking, but enough to remind me this is Beta 4 with no apparent updates since 2018. This region has been abandoned by its creator, which means these anomalies are permanent features now.
FINAL FIELD NOTES
Pokemon Heaven has bones. Good bones! The visual work is legitimately impressive for a FireRed hack of its era. The story attempts something beyond "collect badges, fight Elite Four." Lostsouls clearly had vision.
But vision without completion is just a sketch. And a sketch doesn't satisfy the part of my brain that needs to see 100.0% on that Pokedex screen. Living Dex is NOT possible without cheats or external tools. That's the kiss of death for someone like me.
RECOMMENDATION: Casual travelers who want a few hours of novel scenery? Acceptable destination. Completionists? Shiny hunters? Anyone who needs that dopamine hit of a full Pokedex? Stay far, far away. Your spreadsheets will weep.
Current completion: 67.3%. Time invested: 12 hours, 47 minutes. Satisfaction level: Incomplete. Like my Pokedex. Like my SOUL.
—DexHunter Ace, signing off. Going to go stare at my Unbound Living Dex to feel something again.
