MISSION LOG: POKEMON GIOVANNI'S REVENGE

Explorer: Lorekeeper Lyra (LVL. 66)
Region Status: Beta Territory
Expedition Duration: Approximately 3 hours

THE PREMISE

I walked into this region with my heart open and my notebook ready. The concept alone had me intrigued—finally, a narrative that flips the script. We're not the bright-eyed trainer setting off from Pallet Town. We are Giovanni. The fallen crime lord. The father who lost everything. The man who watched his empire crumble while some ten-year-old dismantled his life's work with a Pikachu.

That premise? Chef's kiss. Villain protagonists are criminally underexplored in this community, and the potential for a revenge arc dripping with moral ambiguity had me practically vibrating with anticipation.

THE REALITY

Oh, how I wish the execution matched the ambition.

The region itself uses new tiles and graphics, and I'll give credit where it's due—the custom tileset makes this town feel lived-in, particularly the early Rocket hideout areas. There's a grittiness to the palette that suits the tone. Dark greens, muted grays, the kind of visual language that whispers this isn't your childhood adventure.

But here's where my heart started to sink: the writing. The dialogue exists, yes. Words appear on screen. Characters open their mouths and sounds presumably come out. But it reads like placeholder text wearing a trenchcoat, pretending to be a narrative. Giovanni—Giovanni, one of the most complex antagonists in the original Kanto archives—speaks in flat declarations that strip away any nuance. Where's the bitterness? The calculated menace? The grief of a man who canonically disbanded Team Rocket because he was ashamed?

NOTE: If you're here for deep character work, temper your expectations. The skeleton of a story exists, but the flesh hasn't grown in yet.

THE SOUNDSCAPE

The music choice for this route? Well... it's FireRed's soundtrack. Unchanged. Unaltered. The same Viridian Forest theme playing while Giovanni supposedly plots his dark resurgence.

I cannot overstate how much this deflated me. Music is everything in establishing tone. Imagine the Explorers of Sky partner's sacrifice scene with generic dungeon music. Unthinkable, right? This region needed brooding strings, ominous percussion, something that said the villain is the hero now, and the world should tremble. Instead, I got the same cheerful Route 1 jingle while recruiting grunts for criminal operations.

THE JOURNEY

Mechanically, the expedition was... brief. The beta status becomes apparent quickly—areas feel truncated, events end abruptly, and the promise of "taking back revenge" manifests as fairly standard trainer battles with Rocket aesthetics. The encounter tables are functional but uninspired, and the writing saves the mediocre encounter tables... wait, no. No, it doesn't. Not here. The writing needed to carry this concept, and it stumbles under the weight.

I checked every bookshelf. I spoke to every NPC. I was desperate for worldbuilding crumbs—journals detailing Giovanni's fall, grunts with personal stakes, anything to make this feel like a living, breathing underworld. What I found was sparse.

FIELD ASSESSMENT

This is a concept piece. A proof of concept for something that could be remarkable. The bones are here:

  • Villain protagonist (rare, valuable)
  • Custom visual assets (appreciated)
  • A foundation that could support genuine narrative weight

But it's unfinished in ways that go beyond beta bugs. The soul isn't there yet. And for someone like me—someone who plays these expeditions for the story, for the characters who make me feel things—that absence is palpable.

NOTE: This region may evolve. Beta territories often do. I'd recommend monitoring for future updates rather than investing emotionally now.

FINAL COORDINATES

I wanted to love this. A Giovanni revenge story could have been the morally complex, emotionally devastating journey I crave. Instead, I found a sketch of that vision—promising in outline, hollow in execution. The custom tiles show effort. The concept shows ambition. But skip the dialogue? You monster—except here, I almost wish I had, because what's there only reminded me of what could have been.

I'll keep this region flagged in my archives. Sometimes the most frustrating expeditions are the ones where you can see the masterpiece trapped inside the marble, waiting for someone to finish carving.
