LOG ENTRY: THE GANTZ EXPEDITION
I dusted off the old Flashcart for this one. The intel promised a new region, and you know me—I can't resist a new frontier, provided it doesn't require an internet connection or a degree in quantum physics to play. I loaded up Pokemon Gantz hoping for a nice, quiet adventure. What I got was a region that screams at you.
VISUALS AND AUDIO
I'll give credit where it's due: The sprite work is faithful to Gen 3 style. None of that 3D nonsense or over-designed monsters that look like kitchen appliances. The overworld sprites have a fresh coat of paint, looking crisp on the GameBoy Advance screen. It reminds me of the good old days in Hoenn, before they started adding too many bells and whistles.
However, the local dialect is... aggressive. The intel mentioned "ALL CAPS," and they weren't kidding. Every text box feels like the locals are shouting orders at me. It brings back memories of the original GameBoy, sure, but my hearing isn't what it used to be, and I don't need a text box yelling about potions. It feels just like 1999 (but faster), mostly because I'm mashing the A button to stop the screaming.
THE ANARCHY OF CHOICE
Here is where things go off the rails. Back in my day, we had structure. You beat Brock, then you beat Misty. Simple. Efficient. In Gantz, they have this "Choose the Gym" system. You can challenge leaders in different orders. Some might call this "freedom"; I call it a lack of discipline. I spent half my time wandering around wondering if I was walking into a death trap or a daycare center.
NOTE: If you enjoy walking into a Gym only to realize you are woefully under-leveled because you took a wrong turn at Albuquerque, this region is for you. I prefer a roadmap.
THE "SEEKER" PHENOMENON
Apparently, there's a heavy focus on hunting Legendary Pokemon here. The locals call themselves "Seekers." To me, it just sounds like a fancy excuse to fill the map with overpowered monsters. No gimmicks, just good Pokemon—that's all I ask for. But here, everyone wants to shove a legendary bird in your face. I miss the days when finding a Moltres meant getting lost in a cave for three days, not checking a list of "features."
And don't get me started on the abilities. I saw things happen in battle that aren't in my old strategy guides. New abilities? What is a 'Mega' evolution? Sounds broken. I know this isn't exactly that, but these newfangled mechanics make my Charizard confused.
FINAL THOUGHTS
The expedition was... unstable. The intel says "Completed," but my field notes scream "Demo." The region feels like a construction site where the architects couldn't agree on the blueprints. It has charm, specifically in the visuals, but the lack of structure and the shouting text boxes gave me a headache.
