LOG ENTRY: RETURN TO KANTO
I dusted off the old Flashcart for this one. Headquarters told me to investigate the Pokemon FR Advanced Challenge region. The name sounded promising. No "Mega Ultra DX" nonsense, just a challenge. I stepped off the truck in Pallet Town, and let me tell you, the air smells fresh. No smog from Galar factories here.
First impressions? It looks like the Kanto I know and tolerate. But beneath the surface, the local wildlife has been... enhanced. I caught a Pidgey on Route 1, and the thing had the muscle definition of a Machamp. Intelligence reports indicate all wild specimens are generated with Perfect IVs. Back in my day, we caught a Rattata with a twisted tail and a lazy eye, and we loved it anyway! But I suppose these genetically superior specimens save me the trouble of breeding for hours. I'm too old for that.
THE COMBAT LANDSCAPE
I walked into the Viridian Forest expecting the usual bug catchers to throw string shots at me. Instead, I was met with tactical warfare. This region has a heavy focus on Double Battles. Now, back in my day, we fought one-on-one like gentlemen! But these youngsters want to gang up on you. I have to admit, it forces you to actually think, rather than just mashing the 'A' button while watching Matlock.
FIELD NOTE: Do not underestimate the Gym Leaders here. They aren't using the standard regulations. Their movesets have been updated to VGC standards. It's brutal, but fair.
The local technology has seen some massive improvements. Infinite TMs? Finally. I used to hoard Thunderbolt like it was gold bullion. Now I can teach it to the whole squad. And the Gen V Repel system... ah, sweet silence. Feels just like 1999 (but faster).
THE ROSTER
This is where the expedition truly shines. The Pokedex is restricted to Kanto and Johto species. No gimmicks, just good Pokemon. I didn't see a single creature that looked like a set of car keys or an ice cream cone. The creator, Devlain, has tweaked the stats and abilities to make even the "useless" ones viable. My Farfetch'd was actually pulling its weight! That’s a miracle in itself.
However, I did notice something missing, and thank Arceus for it. What is a 'Mega' evolution? Sounds broken. You won't find that neon-colored nonsense here. Just pure, raw stats and strategy.
ANOMALIES AND FEATURES
Navigating the Rock Tunnel without Flash was a blessing. I've hated that HM since the Clinton administration. The fact that the Starter Pokemon comes equipped with an Exp. Share is a bit of hand-holding, but my arthritis appreciates not having to switch-train every five minutes.
- Visuals: Crisp, clean FireRed aesthetics. The sprite work is faithful to Gen 3 style.
- Difficulty: The threat level is high. Don't expect to breeze through with just your Starter.
- Bugs: None detected. The simulation runs smoother than my '98 Buick.
MISSION DEBRIEF
This isn't a hack for those who want a carnival ride of new features. This is Kanto on steroids. It respects the source material while fixing the broken bones of the original engine. It’s tough, it’s gritty, and it doesn’t waste my time with long cutscenes about friendship.
If you want to relive the glory days but actually want a challenge that tests your gray matter, this is the one. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go yell at a cloud on Route 12.
