LOG ENTRY: RETURN TO KANTO (AGAIN)
I docked in Pallet Town expecting the usual routine. Wake up, Mom tells me to check the PC (I never do), and I wander into the tall grass to get yelled at by Oak. But this expedition felt... strange. Familiar, but like someone messed with the frequency of my hearing aid.
This region, designated "FireRemix", claims to be a new discovery, but it smells suspiciously like a bootleg of the Ultra Violet sector. The air is thick with nostalgia, though. Feels just like 1999 (but faster). I slapped this cartridge into my device, cranked up the brightness (my eyes aren't what they used to be), and set off.
THE "PROFESSOR ORC" ANOMALY
The first thing I noticed was the local dialect. It is atrocious. The locals refer to Professor Oak as "Professor Orc". I don't know if this is some newfangled slang or if the region's text generator is running on a potato battery. They talk about "Mount Fuji" instead of Mt. Moon. It ruins the immersion.
NOTE: Do not rely on local signage for directions. The text is garbled. Trust your gut and your map from 1996.
However, despite the communication breakdown, the visual fidelity is acceptable. The sprite work is faithful to Gen 3 style. No weird 3D models or sprites that look like they were drawn by a toddler with a crayon. Just crisp, clean pixels.
SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST
The intel mentioned a unique phenomenon regarding starter Pokemon. Usually, you get a handout. A free Charmander just for waking up. Not here. If you ignore the "Professor Orc", you can actually go catch your own starter in a designated facility. Finally! I've been saying for years that trainers these days are too soft. Back in my day, we threw rocks at Pokemon in the Safari Zone until they liked us! This mechanic respects that grit.
The wildlife is strictly restricted to the first three generations. No gimmicks, just good Pokemon. I didn't see a single creature that looked like an ice cream cone or a set of car keys. It was refreshing to trek through Route 1 and just see Pidgeys and Rattatas, not whatever a "Klefki" is.
THE TECHNOLOGY
I appreciate that the trade embargoes have been lifted. Creatures that usually require a Link Cable—like Gengar or Alakazam—seem to evolve through natural growth or other means here. This is crucial. I don't have time to find another explorer with a cable just to get my Machamp.
However, I kept hearing rumors about "Mega Evolutions" from younger explorers. I checked every corner of this ROM. What is a 'Mega' evolution? Sounds broken. Thankfully, I didn't find any. Just good, honest stat blocks.
MISSION DEBRIEF
This expedition is a mixed bag. On one hand, it's a perfect Vanilla+ experience regarding the Pokedex and the map. On the other hand, the text errors and the feeling that this is just a repackaged version of another region (Ultra Violet) rub me the wrong way. It lacks the polish of a Nintendo seal of approval.
If you just want to catch all 386 without hassle and don't care about reading the dialogue, it serves its purpose. But don't expect a literary masterpiece.
