MISSION LOG: SECTOR KANTO [ITERATION: HARDCORE CHALLENGE]
I deployed into this modified Kanto region with specific expectations. The mission briefing was sparse—typical of amateur hack development. Did you even check the Documentation files? Because I certainly tried, and found them nonexistent. This lack of intel is the first sign of a chaotic environment.
My objective was to assess whether this "Hardcore Challenge" offers genuine strategic depth or merely artificial inflation of enemy stats. A true challenge requires the player to understand damage ranges and pivot strategies, not simply grind until their Base Stat Total (BST) overwhelms the opponent.
OPERATIONAL PARAMETERS (THE MECHANICS)
The local laws of physics in this ROM are archaic. I attempted to check a Gyarados for its physical STAB potential, only to be reminded that we are operating on pre-Generation IV logic. The Physical/Special split is mandatory. No excuses. Without it, team building is significantly restricted, forcing me to rely on suboptimal move pools for mixed attackers. It is 2024; running a Ghost-type attack off the Physical stat is a relic I have no patience for.
The region claims to be a "Nuzlocke Variant." I observed that the environment attempts to enforce capture limits and permadeath via binary injection. While I appreciate the forced adherence to the rules, the implementation feels crude. Standard Hardcore Nuzlocke rules: No items in battle. I adhere to this religiously, but this ROM seems to think "Hardcore" simply means giving Gym Leaders illegal movesets rather than improved AI logic.
THREAT LEVEL ASSESSMENT
I engaged the Gym Leader Brock. I anticipated a tactical exchange. Instead, I faced a level curve that was mathematically absurd for that stage of the expedition. I ran the calcs: unless you have perfect IVs and a beneficial nature, you are statistically guaranteed to be 2HKO'd. This isn't difficulty; it's just 'Dark Rising' levels of unfair.
FIELD NOTE: If you attempt this expedition, do not expect fair play. The RNG feels manipulated, and critical hit ratios on hostile entities appear elevated above the standard 6.25%.
The hostile AI remains the standard Generation III default. It does not predict switches; it does not understand setup fodder. It simply clicks the move with the highest base power. I brought a Geodude in on a Normal-type move, expecting a pivot, but the enemy continued to spam Scratch. Disappointing. I want an opponent that forces me to count PP, not one that forces me to save scum.
FINAL ANALYSIS
This region is a crude instrument. It confuses "tedium" with "difficulty." There is no joy in overcoming an obstacle simply because you over-leveled or got lucky with a paralysis proc. A true Hardcore hack, like Radical Red, respects the player's intelligence. This hack only respects the player's tolerance for pain.
