ARRIVAL IN SAPHOSIA (HOENN?)
I packed my rucksack for Hoenn. I expected the smell of sea salt, the sound of trumpets, and a Zigzagoon tackling my shin. I got the salt and the trumpets, but the local wildlife? Something has gone terribly wrong. The locals call this region "Ephemerald," and they claim these creatures are "Saphosian Formes." Back in my day, a Pidgey was a bird, not a... whatever these things are. I feel like I walked into a distortions world without a Silph Scope.
THE FAUNA: MUTATIONS EVERYWHERE
I tried to catch a Wurmple. It didn't look right. I encountered a Wooper that looked suspiciously like a children's television character from the late 90s. The Intel mentioned a "Succubus Jynx" and a "Toxic-waste Quilava." I saw them. I don't like it. I want my fire badger to look like a badger, not a hazmat violation.
However, I must admit, despite the bizarre biology, the sprite work is faithful to Gen 3 style. They fit into the world visually, even if they offend my sensibilities conceptually. It doesn't look like those jagged messes the young ones make in MS Paint. It looks like GameFreak hired a mad scientist.
FIELD NOTE: Do not rely on your old Pokedex knowledge. That creature that looks like a Bug? It's probably a Dragon now. I lost my starter three times because I assumed a rock was just a rock.
THE EXPERIENCE
Navigating the terrain feels crisp. Feels just like 1999 (but faster). The Running Shoes work, the engine is that sturdy Emerald base we all tolerate. But the battles? It's chaos. I'm an old man; I memorized the Type Chart when there were only 15 types. Now everything has shifted. There are new moves, new abilities, and I spend half the battle squinting at the screen trying to figure out what I'm fighting.
The creator spent seven months on this? I respect the hustle. It takes guts to redraw 382 creatures. But for a purist like me? Too many modern features ruined the vibe. I just want to Surf from Petalburg to Dewford without wondering if the Tentacool is going to try to sell me insurance.
SUMMARY OF OPERATIONS
This isn't a vacation for the nostalgic. This is a research expedition into madness. If you are tired of the same old Rattata, you might find joy here. Me? I'm going back to Kanto where the Grimers are made of sludge and the Persians are just cats.
- Visuals: High quality, but strange subjects.
- Audio: Classic Hoenn trumpets. Good.
- Mechanics: Solid Emerald engine, confusing new data.
