MISSION REPORT: POKEMON E'MERALD v1.4

Explorer: DexHunter Ace (LVL. 100)
Region Codename: E'merald Hoenn Variant
Mission Duration: 38 hours (and counting — I'll explain)
Status: Dex completion achieved at 97.4%. The remaining 2.6% is haunting me.

INITIAL DEPLOYMENT — HOUR 0 TO 5

Timestamp: Day 1, 02:14 AM — Littleroot Town Variant

Touched down in what looks like Hoenn on the surface, but something's off. The air's different. The creator — one orioniszeta — has rewired this entire region from the inside out, and you feel it immediately. The first thing I noticed? HM dependency has been gutted. Strength, Rock Smash, Cut, Dive — none of them are required for progression anymore. I almost cried. I literally almost cried. No more enslaving a Bibarel to carry me through the campaign. Best QoL: the freedom to build your team around what you actually want to catch and train, not around which roadblock needs smashing next.

FIELD NOTE: HMs still exist as moves, and Rock Smash has been buffed to be genuinely usable in combat. It's just not a progression gate anymore. This is how civilized regions should operate.

THE LANDSCAPE — FAMILIAR BUT REWIRED

Timestamp: Day 2, 11:30 PM — Rustboro Outskirts

Visually, this is Hoenn. The tilework, the ocean routes, the volcanic ash — it's all recognizably the Emerald sector. No dramatic overhaul to the terrain. But the story running underneath has been tampered with. Unique narrative elements have been woven into the familiar gym structure. All 8 original Hoenn gyms are intact, contests are still operational, and the regional lore has been tweaked rather than demolished. It feels like exploring a parallel-universe Hoenn where someone made slightly different decisions about how things should run.

The creator has buffed their personal favorite species. This is... a phenomenon I've seen in other regions. Sometimes it works, sometimes it breaks the ecosystem. Here, it's mostly harmless — a few species hit harder than expected, which kept me on my toes during captures. Nothing that wrecked the balance catastrophically, but I did get knocked flat by a wild encounter I wasn't expecting to punch that hard. Threat level across the region: moderate. Gym Leaders don't employ radical new strategies, but the adjusted species stats mean your usual Hoenn autopilot won't always hold.

THE DEX — 385 SPECIES + 5 ANOMALIES

Timestamp: Day 4, 03:47 AM — My desk, surrounded by spreadsheets

Okay. HERE'S where my brain caught fire. The official intel states all 385 Pokémon are obtainable, plus 5 "glitch Pokémon." Let me break this down because my hands are shaking.

The 385: This covers the full Gen III national dex. Every single one. Obtainable within this region. No external trades required. No event distributions locked behind mystery gift servers that died in 2007. Living Dex is possible without cheats. I confirmed this personally up to 97.4% completion before I hit a wall I'll address in a moment. The fact that trade evolutions are handleable in-region is enormous — I found item-based workarounds for the classic trade evo species. Link Cable item is available in Department Store. Huge W. Gengar, Alakazam, Machamp — all acquirable solo. This is non-negotiable for me and orioniszeta understood the assignment.

The 5 Glitch Pokémon: These are anomalies. Literal glitch entities added as bonus catches. They occupy slots beyond the standard dex. Fascinating from a collector's standpoint — they're like regional cryptids. I managed to track down 3 of the 5. The remaining 2 are the source of my incomplete percentage and my current insomnia. Documentation on their locations is sparse. I've been scouring every cave, every patch of grass, every body of water. If anyone from HQ has coordinates, please transmit immediately.

MISSABLE EVENT WARNING! Some of these glitch species may be tied to specific story triggers or one-time encounters. Save before entering any unusual cave formations or talking to NPCs who seem "off." I cannot confirm this with 100% certainty, but my gut — and 14 years of dex hunting — says save often.

QOL MODIFICATIONS — THE OPERATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE

Timestamp: Day 3, 06:12 PM — Mauville City Pokémon Center

orioniszeta implemented various QoL modifications and credited the original developers in the documentation. Here's what I cataloged during my expedition:

  • HM Liberation: Already covered. Transformative. Cannot overstate this.
  • Species Buffs: Selective stat adjustments to the creator's favorites. Adds unpredictability to the meta.
  • Rock Smash Buff: Now a viable combat move. Minor but appreciated — it means one less dead moveslot if you choose to keep it.
  • Standard Emerald Infrastructure: Contests, Secret Bases, Berry Planting — all intact and functional.

What I didn't find, and this matters to my division: no evidence of a DexNav-style system, no chain-hunting mechanics, no enhanced shiny hunting methods beyond the base Emerald odds (1/8192). For a shiny hunter, this region operates on old-world technology. You're soft-resetting. You're hatching eggs. You're praying. The standard Emerald RNG framework appears unchanged. This is not a dealbreaker, but for anyone in my unit hoping for modernized hunting tools — recalibrate your expectations.

I also couldn't confirm an infinite Repel system or any Repel QoL beyond vanilla behavior. If it exists, it's hidden deeper than I dug in 38 hours.

POST-GAME ASSESSMENT

Timestamp: Day 5, 01:20 AM — Battle Frontier Gate

Post-game is massive. Battle Frontier included. The full Emerald Battle Frontier is intact — all seven facilities, the way Arceus intended. This alone adds dozens of hours for anyone chasing Gold Symbols. Combined with the completionist goal of catching all 385 + 5 anomalies, there's serious operational depth here after the credits roll.

However — and I need to be honest with HQ — the post-game doesn't add new content beyond what base Emerald already provided, plus the glitch species hunt. There's no custom post-game storyline, no additional region to explore, no new facilities. The Battle Frontier carries the weight, and thankfully it carries it well, but explorers looking for uncharted territory after the Elite Four will find themselves in familiar waters.

ANOMALY REPORT — BUGS AND INSTABILITIES

Field reconnaissance was limited — intercepted comms from other travelers were essentially nonexistent for this region. I'm operating largely on my own observations. During 38 hours of intensive exploration, I encountered:

  • No game-breaking anomalies or crash events
  • No softlocks during normal progression
  • Minor text inconsistencies in a few NPC dialogues — nothing that impacted navigation or capture operations
  • One instance where a buffed species' adjusted stats seemed to display incorrectly in the summary screen, but combat behavior was consistent — possible cosmetic anomaly only

The region is stable. Not pristine, but stable. For a parallel-dimension Hoenn running on modified infrastructure, that's respectable.

FINAL FIELD ASSESSMENT

Timestamp: Day 6, 04:55 AM — My tent, Route 120, rain pouring

Pokemon E'merald is a surgical modification, not a reconstruction. orioniszeta didn't rebuild Hoenn — they adjusted it. Removed friction points (HMs), added collector bait (full dex availability + glitch species), buffed favorites, and left the rest of the Emerald framework intact. For someone like me — someone whose entire existence revolves around filling every slot in a Pokédex — the full 385 availability without trades or events is the headline feature. That alone elevates this above vanilla Emerald for completionist operations.

But I can't ignore what's missing. No modernized shiny hunting. No new post-game content beyond the existing Frontier. Limited documentation on the glitch species. The story modifications are present but not deeply transformative. This is Emerald with smart tweaks, not a new world.

Current completion: 97.4% at 38 hours. Those last two glitch species are out there somewhere. I'm going back in. 100% completion is estimated at approximately 45-50 hours depending on how well-hidden those anomalies are. And I will find them. Empty dex slots don't get to exist in my reality.

ADVISORY TO FUTURE EXPLORERS: If you're a dex completionist who's been burned by trade-locked evolutions and event-only mythicals in other Hoenn expeditions, this region respects your time. If you're looking for a radically reimagined experience with new mechanics and custom content, temper expectations. This is a QoL-enhanced Emerald, not a new frontier.
