MISSION REPORT: POKEMON DARK BEGIN
Explorer: DexHunter Ace (LVL. 100)
Region Designation: Dark Begin — Unknown Sector (FireRed Base)
Build: Beta 1
Status Upon Departure: Unresolved. Deeply Unresolved.
INITIAL DEPLOYMENT — FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Hour 0 – Touched down in the starting town.
Okay. OKAY. Let me get this out of my system first: the visual landscape of this region genuinely caught me off guard. New tilesets everywhere — we're not in recycled Kanto territory. The architecture feels like someone actually sat down and hand-crafted towns instead of copy-pasting Pewter City for the 900th time. There's a Day/Night Time System functioning here, and it changes the atmosphere of every route. Nocturnal species spawning at night? I was practically vibrating. My spreadsheet was READY.
But then — and I need you to feel the exact moment my excitement hit a wall — I started asking the questions that matter. The completionist questions. And the answers started getting… thin.
THE POKEDEX SITUATION
Hour 3 – First major red flag.
I could not determine the full scope of the regional Pokedex. No NPC gave me a species count. No Professor rattled off a number. I scoured every early route, documented encounter tables manually (yes, I have the spreadsheet — row 47, columns C through Q), and what I found was a modest but functional selection of species in the opening areas. Some interesting encounter variety tied to the day/night cycle, which I respect.
But here's where my palms started sweating: there is zero clarity on whether a Living Dex is achievable. No evidence of trade evolution alternatives. No Link Cable item spotted in any shop I could access. No mention of it from any NPC. For a completionist, that's not a yellow flag — that's a crimson emergency flare.
MISSABLE EVENT WARNING! Save before entering the cave — actually, save before entering ANYTHING in this hack. The beta status means I couldn't confirm if any encounters are one-shot only, and I refuse to lose a single dex entry to carelessness.
QUALITY OF LIFE — OR LACK THEREOF
Hour 5 – Cataloguing regional technology.
Let me run down what I could verify:
- Day/Night System: Functional. Affects encounters. This is a genuine positive — it means route variety doubles effectively. I was catching different species on Route 2 at midnight versus midday. My dex entries ticked up because of this.
- Repel System: Standard. No infinite repel toggle detected. I burned through Repels like oxygen. No QoL upgrade here.
- Trade Evolutions: Unconfirmed. I found no Link Cable item, no alternative evolution NPC, no Stone vendor carrying anything unusual. If Haunter can't become Gengar without a second device, my completion percentage caps out and I will lose sleep over it.
- Shiny Hunting: No modified shiny methods detected. Base FireRed odds (1/8192). No DexNav. No chain mechanics. No Shiny Charm. This region is essentially a shiny desert. Bring water and patience.
The absence of modern QoL features hit hard. I've been spoiled by hacks where the Link Cable item is available in Department Store. Huge W. — but that W does not exist here. Not yet, anyway.
THE REGION ITSELF
Hour 7 – Deep route exploration.
Credit where credit is absolutely due: the new region has personality. The tileset work creates a world that doesn't feel like a Kanto reskin. Towns have distinct identities. Routes have environmental storytelling — collapsed structures, overgrown paths, areas that suggest a darker history to this region (fitting the "Dark Begin" name). The day/night transitions add genuine atmosphere. I found myself stopping to note how a forest route looked completely different under moonlight.
The hostile entities — wild encounters, trainer battles — presented a moderate threat level in the early-to-mid sections. Nothing that required hardcore strategizing, but enough to keep me from autopiloting. Gym Leaders (the ones I reached) used competent teams, though I wouldn't call their tactics "advanced." More like "reasonably aware that type coverage exists."
THE BETA PROBLEM
Hour 9 – The wall.
This is a Beta 1 build. I need to be brutally honest about what that means for someone like me:
- Completion percentage achievable: Unknown. Possibly capped. I could not determine an endpoint.
- Post-game content: None detected. No Battle Frontier. No extended legendary questlines. No rematch systems. The expedition simply… runs out of road.
- Anomalies (bugs): Minor tile errors in two locations. One NPC dialogue that looped incorrectly. Nothing region-breaking, but the kind of instability that makes me save every 4 minutes.
- Story completion: The narrative appears unfinished. I hit what felt like a midpoint and the path forward closed. Beta ceiling confirmed.
I logged approximately 11 hours before I'd exhausted every accessible route, caught every available species I could find, and triple-checked every town for hidden items. My dex sat at what I estimate was maybe 38-42% of whatever the full regional count is supposed to be. That number haunts me.
NOTE: The official intel tags this as both "Completed" and "Beta 1" simultaneously. That's contradictory data. Based on my field experience, this is firmly a beta. Treat it as an incomplete expedition zone. Plan accordingly.
THE COMPLETIONIST VERDICT
Here's my damage report, from someone whose entire identity revolves around seeing 100% on a Pokedex screen:
- Living Dex possible without cheats? — Cannot confirm. Likely not in current build.
- All legendaries/mythicals accessible? — Insufficient data. None encountered.
- Shiny hunting viability? — Base odds only. No enhanced methods. Brutal.
- Post-game depth? — Nonexistent in current build.
- Trade evolution solution? — None found.
- 100% completion possible? — No. Not in Beta 1. The road literally ends.
The foundation is here. The tileset work is strong. The day/night system adds real encounter diversity. The region has a sense of place. But for a completionist — for me — a hack where I can't see the finish line is like being handed a puzzle with missing pieces. I can admire the artwork on the ones I have, but my brain won't stop screaming about the gaps.
I'll be watching for future builds. If the creators patch in trade evolution items, expand the dex to full accessibility, and finish the regional storyline, this could climb significantly. But right now? Right now my spreadsheet has too many empty cells, and I can feel each one like a splinter.
Estimated expedition time to exhaust current content: 11 hours
Estimated completion percentage of available content: ~85% (of what's accessible — NOT of the intended full game)
Threat Level: Moderate
Completionist Satisfaction: Low (due to beta ceiling, not quality)
