THE LANDSCAPE: APOCALYPSE NOW
I packed for a standard badge run. I brought my capture net, my spreadsheet, and my lucky A-button thumb guard. What I stepped into was a bio-hazard zone. This isn't Kanto. This is Kanto after a Necrozma-level extinction event. The local populace refers to it as "Dardusk". The visuals are bleak, the atmosphere is oppressive, and—most importantly for my blood pressure—the standard infrastructure is gone. The region is overrun by "Zombies". This is not a drill. This is a survival horror environment grafted onto a creature collector engine.
THE CATCH: DATA UNKNOWN
My Pokedex is screaming. We have Gen 1 through 3 native fauna, but there are unauthorized genetic splices—Fakemon anomalies—roaming the tall grass. Without a wiki or a documentation PDF, I am flying blind. I judge games by their "catchability", and right now, the catchability is chaotic. I spotted a strange specimen near the ruins of Pallet Town. Is it a legendary? Is it a glitch? I don't know, and that uncertainty keeps me up at night. Living Dex is possible without cheats? Doubtful in this Alpha state. I see empty slots, and I have no map to fill them.
MECHANICS: THE SCAVENGER HUNT NIGHTMARE
Here is the kicker that made me drop my clipboard: There are no Gym Leaders. You don't battle Brock to prove your worth. You find badges lying on the ground like common Potions. For a completionist, this is terrifying. Is the Cascade Badge behind that tree? Did I miss the Soul Badge in that trash can? This nonlinear collection method is a recipe for anxiety.
Missable event warning! Save before entering the cave. The zombie entities can corner you, and with the badge locations being random, you might walk into a high-level zone with zero badges to control your team.
QUALITY OF LIFE (OR LACK THEREOF)
The Physical/Special split is present, which is the only thing keeping the combat civilized. You can run inside buildings, which is essential when undead sprites are chasing you. However, I desperately missed standard amenities. I prayed for the Best QoL: Infinite Repel system, but instead, I got an Infinite Zombie system. The encounter rate feels aggressive, likely to heighten the tension, but it ruins my shiny hunting rhythm.
VERDICT: INCOMPLETE DATA
This expedition was short. 100% completion took me 2 hours, not because I'm fast, but because the content wall hit me face-first. It is an Alpha 0.1 specimen. An interesting proof of concept for Explorers who want to see the engine pushed into horror territory, but for a DexHunter? It's a nightmare of uncatalogued assets.
