LOG ENTRY: REGION DAIA
Date: Unknown (My internal clock reset after the last warp tile)
Location: Somewhere that looks suspiciously like Pallet Town
Hardware: GameBoy Advance SP (AGS-101) with Flashcart
THE ARRIVAL
I dusted off the old Flashcart for this one. Headquarters sent me intel claiming this region, "Daia," is "more fun than the Gaia version." That is a bold claim. Gaia was a proper expedition—structured, reliable, good maps. This? This feels like someone took the blueprints of Kanto, shook them up in a bag, and spilled them out on the table.
I loaded it up, hoping for a nice, quiet journey. Feels just like 1999 (but faster), mostly because I'm holding down the speed-up button to get through the nonsensical dialogue. The air here tastes stale, like recycled code.
THE LANDSCAPE
Visually, it’s standard issue. The sprite work is faithful to Gen 3 style, which is the only compliment I’ll give it. I didn't see any of those horrific "Fakemon" monstrosities that look like they were drawn by a toddler with a crayon, so that's a plus. It’s clean, familiar, and safe.
However, the geography is confusing. The locals (NPCs) mutter about this place being superior to other regions, but they’re walking into walls. It doesn't have the polish of a finished world. It feels like a construction site where the foreman walked off the job three years ago.
FIELD NOTE: If you see a text box claiming to be "Advanced," ignore it. It is likely a translation error or a lie. Keep your Potion count high.
THE ANOMALIES
The mission briefing stated the gameplay was "adjusted to a new level." In my experience, that usually means they just cranked up the enemy levels without giving you decent wild Pokemon to catch. It’s artificial difficulty. I want a challenge, sure, but I want it fair. I want Gym Leaders who know type matchups, not Level 50 Pidgeys on Route 1.
And don't get me started on the stability. The region feels fragile. I was half-expecting the game to crash every time I opened the Pokedex. No gimmicks, just good Pokemon is what I asked for. What I got was a region that doesn't seem to know what it wants to be.
THE VERDICT
I hiked through the tall grass for hours, and frankly, I’d rather be back in vanilla Kanto. This "Daia" region tries to ride the coattails of better expeditions without putting in the work. It lacks the soul of the classics and the polish of the modern greats.
If you’re looking for a fresh coat of paint, look elsewhere. If you want to relive the glory days, just play FireRed again. This expedition is a wash.
