LOG ENTRY: THE "COMPLETE" MISNOMER
I packed my gear for a long haul. The dossier said "Pokemon Complete Crystal". I dusted off the Flashcart, expecting a full tour of Johto and Kanto, maybe even a rematch with Red atop Mt. Silver. Instead, I find myself in a region that's still under construction. Back in my day, when we bought a cartridge, the whole game was on it! These days, you kids and your "Beta v0.2" patches... it's enough to make a man retire.
That said, once I stopped grumbling about the misleading signage, I found a region that actually respects the old ways. No fairies fluttering about, no "Dynamax" nonsense making my Pokemon look like balloons. Just good, honest battling.
THE TERRAIN: A FRESH COAT OF PAINT
The visual landscape of this region is vibrant, unlike anything in the standard Johto sector. The architects have laid down new tilesets and palettes that make the world pop without ruining the crunch of the 8-bit aesthetic. It looks like how I remember 1999 looking, not how it actually looked. The UI has been scrubbed clean, too.
NOTE: The local technology includes "Instant Text". Finally! I don't have time to read at the speed of a Slowpoke anymore.
LOCAL TECHNOLOGY: MODERN COMFORTS
I usually hate newfangled gadgets, but this region has implemented Running Shoes right out of the gate. Thank Arceus. Walking at a snail's pace was fine when I was ten, but my knees can't take the drag anymore. And they've imported Repellents that work like the ones in the Unova region—asking if you want to use another one immediately. Feels just like 1999 (but faster).
However, the "New Locations" are a mixed bag. Some routes are fresh, but I ran into barriers where the world just... ends. "More coming soon," the signposts say. Hmph.
THREAT LEVEL: RESPECTABLE
The hostile entities here aren't messing around. The Gym Leaders have updated their tactics—fixed AI and better leveling curves. It's not the brutal, unfair punishment of some of those "Kaizo" regions, but it's enough to wake you up. A perfect Vanilla+ experience, or at least it will be when they finish building the darn thing.
THE VERDICT
Despite the name, this expedition is cut short. It's a promising foundation, but calling it "Complete" right now is a tall tale. No gimmicks, just good Pokemon, but I'm packing up camp until the construction crews finish the rest of the map.
