LOG ENTRY: DAY 1 - THE SPLASH HEARD 'ROUND THE WORLD
I touched down in Pallet Town expecting the usual routine: Oak, parcel, Pokedex, get out. Instead, I was handed a Level 5 Magikarp and a single Master Ball. My eye twitched. This isn't a standard expedition; this is chaos theory in motion.
The local history indicates a previous entity named 'Clay' decimated the region's Gym Leaders so thoroughly that the entire league has engaged in an arms race. The Threat Level is elevated. But my mission remains: fill the slots. All of them.
THE LANDSCAPE: NON-LINEAR ANXIETY
The region operates on an Open World protocol. The barriers are gone. I walked straight from Pallet to Viridian, looked at the route to Pewter, and then just... walked to Cinnabar? The freedom is paralyzing. As a completionist, I crave structure. Here, the structure is 'Survive.'
I found myself sweating looking at the map. Without a linear path, tracking encounter tables becomes a logistical nightmare. I had to create a spreadsheet just to track which patches of grass I hadn't combed yet. If you miss a route, you might never go back.
THE ECOLOGY & COLLECTION
The fauna here is aggressive. Because the Gym Leaders are traumatized from the previous war, they don't hold back. But for a Dex Hunter, the real question is availability. I scouted the Celadon Department Store immediately (since I could just walk there). Link Cable item is available in Department Store. Huge W. This confirms that trade evolutions are patched for solo operatives. Alakazam is back on the menu, boys.
However, the distribution of species is erratic. With the open borders, you can stumble into high-threat zones with nothing but a flopping fish. I spent three hours grinding on Route 1 just to stabilize my team before venturing into the deep wild.
FIELD NOTE: Do not waste the Master Ball on a Pidgey out of panic. The Legendaries are out there, and they are not scaling down to your level.
THE VERDICT
This isn't a vacation; it's a survival horror for people who like organizing lists. The lack of hand-holding is refreshing but terrifying. 100% completion took me 85 hours. mostly because I kept backtracking to make sure I didn't miss a rare spawn in a low-level area I skipped.
If you have the neurological need to catch them all, this region will test your routing skills. It's messy, it's hard, and the Magikarp start is a cruel joke that I eventually learned to respect. Living Dex is possible without cheats. barely, if you manage your resources and don't get wiped by a buffed Brock.
