LOG ENTRY: HOUR 85 - THE SHAKES ARE GONE
I finally put the console down. My thumbs are calloused, my eyes are dry, and my dopamine receptors are fried. 100% completion took me 85 hours. That is not a typo. That is a lifestyle choice. I have scoured every tile of the Kohto region, and I am here to report that the neurological itch has been scratched.
Pokemon Bronze 2 is not trying to reinvent the wheel; it is trying to perfect the rolling motion. It feels like a lost cartridge from 2001 that Nintendo buried in a time capsule. For an Explorer of my caliber, this is both a blessing and a curse. A blessing because the nostalgia is potent; a curse because the old-school grind is real.
THE CENSUS (POKEDEX REPORT)
Let's get straight to the meat. The local fauna consists primarily of the classic 251, dispersed across a brand new geography. I approached this with my usual skepticism regarding trade evolutions. I was sweating bullets thinking about Gengar.
FIELD NOTE: Living Dex is possible without cheats. The local technology allows for trade evolutions to occur via alternate methods or in-game events. No Link Cable required, though the item itself might appear as a relic.
However, do not expect to be handed these creatures. The encounter rates in caves are aggressive. I spent three hours in a dark tunnel just to find a specific rock-type. It was miserable. I loved it.
REGIONAL TOPOGRAPHY & THREAT LEVELS
The Kohto region is dense. The mapping is tight, claustrophobic in the best way. It forces you to engage with the wild grass. You cannot simply skirt the edges. And just when you think you are done, when you think you have conquered the summit... the map expands.
The rumours are true. There is a second region. The post-game is not an afterthought; it is a second course. Traveling to the Kanto sector after conquering Kohto felt like unlocking a new tier of existence. The level curve spikes here. The Gym Leaders do not play nice. They use items. They switch out.
ANOMALIES & QOL
This is a Gen 2 engine hack, so do not expect the modern comforts of Gen 6. There is no physical/special split in the standard build, which means you need to rewire your brain to remember that Fire Punch is Special. It’s jarring, but authentic.
WARNING: Missable event warning! Save before entering the cave. There are legendary encounters that do not respawn if you faint them. I learned this the hard way with a certain bird and had to revert to a save file from 4 hours prior. Do not make my mistake.
The pacing is deliberate. You start in Old Oak Town, and the narrative pushes you forward without holding your hand. The "Evil Team" presence is pervasive, providing ample fodder for experience grinding. It’s a traditionalist’s paradise.
VERDICT
If you are looking for a casual stroll, look elsewhere. If you are looking to fill 251 slots and grind until your fingers bleed in a glorious 8-bit landscape, this is your mission. The satisfaction of seeing that "CAUGHT" symbol next to every entry in a dual-region map is unparalleled.
