MISSION REPORT: POKEMON BATTLE WORLD
Explorer: Old Man Earl (LVL. 81)
Region Surveyed: Battle World
Base Sector: FireRed Infrastructure
Status: Beta 2 — Incomplete Expedition
INITIAL ASSESSMENT
Well, they promised me a "New Region" and "New Story." What I got was a jumbled mess of eight generations worth of creatures crammed into a world that doesn't know what it wants to be. Back in my day, we had 151 Pokemon and that was plenty. Now I'm tripping over pocket monsters that look like they wandered in from a toaster commercial.
The moment I booted this cartridge on my flashcart, I knew something was off. Generation 8 Pokemon? All starters from every region? What is a 'Mega' evolution? Sounds broken. This hack throws everything at the wall like a Primeape having a tantrum, and precious little of it sticks.
THE LANDSCAPE
The regional geography is... present. I'll give it that much. The Alfa and Omega Team built something here, but the terrain feels stitched together from spare parts. One moment you're walking through what could pass for a Kanto forest, the next you're staring at tiles that don't quite match. The sprite work is not faithful to Gen 3 style — it's a hodgepodge of assets from different eras that clash like a Jigglypuff at a Snorlax convention.
Too many modern features ruined the vibe. I counted creatures from generations I refuse to acknowledge, all wandering around like they own the place. Where's my Rattata? Where's my Pidgey? Buried under a mountain of Wooloos and whatever that ice cream cone thing is supposed to be.
THREAT ASSESSMENT
Difficulty remains unspecified in official intelligence, and I can confirm why: it's inconsistent. Some trainers hit like wet Magikarps. Others fielded teams that made no tactical sense but somehow steamrolled my squad. The Gym Leaders are present — "All Gym Leaders" they promised — but quantity ain't quality, youngster.
WARNING: Beta 2 status means anomalies are frequent. I encountered several progression hiccups that required reloading. Save often. Trust nothing.
REGIONAL PHENOMENA
- Starter Selection: All starters from Gen 1-8 available. Sounds generous until you realize balance went out the window with the Spearows.
- Pokemon Availability: Gen 1-8 creatures roam freely. For purists like myself, this is sensory overload.
- Story: "New Story" is generous. It exists. That's the kindest thing I can say.
- Stability: Beta-grade. Expect rough edges sharper than a Sandslash.
FIELD NOTES
I wanted to like this expedition. I really did. But this ain't a Vanilla+ experience — it's a kitchen sink hack wearing a FireRed disguise. No gimmicks, just good Pokemon? Not here. This region has all the gimmicks and none of the restraint.
The intelligence mentioned "Completed" in the tags, but Beta 2 tells a different story. Either someone at HQ got their wires crossed, or this region's definition of "complete" differs significantly from mine. I've seen more polish on a Geodude.
NOTE: If you're seeking a classic Kanto or Johto experience with modern conveniences, keep walking. This ain't it, trainer.
VERDICT
This hack wants to be everything to everyone and ends up being nothing to anyone. Ambitious? Sure. Playable? Barely. Recommended for old-timers like myself? Absolutely not. Maybe when it hits a proper release version, I'll revisit. Until then, my flashcart has better things to run.
Whatever happened to just beating the Elite Four?
— Old Man Earl, signing off from another disappointing expedition
