LOG ENTRY: 0800 HOURS - PALLET TOWN SECTOR
I dusted off the old Flashcart for this one. Headquarters told me I was deploying to Kanto. I thought, "Finally, a simple mission. Get the parcel, deliver to Oak, crush the Elite Four." I packed my supplies expecting a nice, quiet stroll through Route 1.
I was wrong. This isn't the Kanto I remember. The geography is familiar, but the local technology has gone haywire.
VISUALS: FRESH PAINT, WEIRD CRITTERS
I'll give the architects credit where it's due: The sprite work is faithful to Gen 3 style. It doesn't hurt my eyes like those newfangled 3D holograms the kids play with these days. The trees look like trees, and the houses look like houses. But then I looked closer at the wildlife.
I saw a Meowth that looked like it hadn't slept in a week—some sort of "Alolan" variant? And don't get me started on the bugs. I ran into a Scyther that looked like it had been glued to rocks. They call it "Kleavor." In my day, we didn't need our bugs to be made of stone to be tough. We just leveled them up!
ANOMALIES: TOO MUCH NOISE
The mission briefing mentioned "Mega Evolution." I encountered a trainer using this forbidden technique near Viridian. What is a 'Mega' evolution? Sounds broken. My Blastoise doesn't need to glow and grow extra cannons to do his job. It feels like a cheat code.
And another thing—the wild Pokemon are just wandering around in the open! Too many modern features ruined the vibe. Part of the thrill of being an Explorer is the suspense of the tall grass. You step in, you hold your breath. Here? You just see them walking around like they own the place. It takes all the sport out of it.
LOCAL AMENITIES
I tried to teach my bird to Fly me to Pewter City, but apparently, this region uses an "Air Taxi" service. Now, I appreciate saving a move slot—I really do—but it feels impersonal. I miss the bond between a trainer and their HM slave.
However, I must admit, having Pokemon follow you around—like in the Yellow days—brought a tear to this old man's eye. That's a feature I can get behind. It reminds me of my old Pikachu, Sparky (may he rest in peace).
FIELD NOTE: If you are a purist, bring earplugs. The "Fan Made Moves" are flashy and loud. I stick to Earthquake and Surf. They never failed me in '99, they won't fail me now.
THE VERDICT
This expedition is messy. It's Kanto, but it's been cluttered with every gimmick from the last twenty years. It tries to do too much. It's not a bad experience if you like that sort of chaos, but for an old timer like me? It's a headache.
