MISSION REPORT: ARTHROPODA DYTISCID EXPEDITION
Explorer: DexHunter Ace (LVL. 100)
Region: Arthropoda Dytiscid Marshlands
Expedition Duration: 1.5 hours
Completion Status: 100% (ALL BEETLES CATALOGUED)
INITIAL ASSESSMENT
Okay. OKAY. Deep breaths. This is NOT your standard expedition. I went in expecting a full Pokedex grind and instead found myself knee-deep in marsh water, cataloguing actual diving beetles while wearing a lab coat. My completionist brain short-circuited for about fifteen minutes before recalibrating to the mission parameters.
This is a micro-region. A specimen study. A research expedition disguised as a Pokemon hack. And you know what? My spreadsheet-loving heart found unexpected joy here.
THE LANDSCAPE
The marshlands are compact but surprisingly detailed. Custom sprites everywhere—scientific diagrams of Dytiscidae anatomy plastered on walls, beetle specimens rendered with genuine care. The creator clearly has an entomology obsession that rivals my Pokedex obsession, and I respect that on a molecular level.
New maps built on the FireRed tileset feel appropriately swampy and research-station-adjacent. Nothing groundbreaking visually, but the theming is consistent. Every NPC, every sign, every interaction reinforces the "you are a scientist studying beetles" narrative.
COMPLETION METRICS
Here's where my brain started firing on all cylinders. The mission objective is crystal clear: talk to ALL the beetles for the ending. That's it. That's the Pokedex equivalent. And let me tell you, I tracked down every single one of those chitinous friends in exactly 1 hour and 27 minutes.
MISSABLE EVENT WARNING! Some beetles only appear after specific dialogue triggers. Save frequently and explore methodically. I almost missed one hiding near the eastern marsh edge because I was rushing.
No Living Dex to build here. No shiny hunting methods to exploit. No DexNav chaining. This expedition operates on completely different parameters than standard regional surveys. But completion IS possible, and the ending payoff exists for those who put in the work.
QOL ASSESSMENT
Limited scope means limited QoL features to evaluate. No Link Cable item needed—there are no trade evolutions because there are no evolutions. No Infinite Repel system because wild encounters aren't the focus. The "game" is the investigation itself.
What IS here works cleanly:
- Clear objective communication
- No softlock anomalies detected
- Dialogue advances properly
- Ending triggers correctly upon full beetle catalogue
THREAT LEVEL & CHALLENGE
Minimal hostile encounters. This is an exploration and dialogue-focused expedition. If you're looking for strategic battles or gym leader tactics, you're in the wrong marsh. The "challenge" is purely completionist: finding every beetle, exhausting every dialogue option.
POST-GAME CONTENT
None. Once you've catalogued all beetles and witnessed the ending, the expedition concludes. The creator mentioned "something more involved planned for release"—suggesting this is essentially a proof-of-concept or demo build. Current content is self-contained but brief.
FIELD NOTES
NOTE: This is a mini-hack in the truest sense. Adjust expectations accordingly. You're not catching Pokemon. You're conducting field research on Dytiscidae. The experience is novel but extremely short.
The plot involving the "vital species" is quirky and earnest. Peculiar NPCs deliver exposition about diving beetle ecology with surprising enthusiasm. It's educational in a way that made me briefly consider starting a real-world insect spreadsheet.
I won't lie—my Pokedex completion instincts felt underutilized. No 493 slots to fill. No percentage tracker climbing toward that beautiful 100%. But the completionist itch WAS scratched by the beetle-hunting mechanic, even if it only took 87 minutes to reach full completion.
FINAL EXPEDITION ASSESSMENT
Arthropoda Dytiscid is a curiosity. A passion project about beetles wearing Pokemon ROM hack clothing. For completionists seeking a quick, achievable 100% clear, it delivers—but don't expect depth. For anyone wanting traditional Pokemon mechanics, shiny hunting, or post-game content... this marsh has none of that.
Solid execution for what it is. Just know what it is before you wade in.
