MISSION LOG: REGION HOENN (DESIGNATION: ANOTHER EMERALD)
This is Old Man Earl, reporting from my porch. I dusted off the old flashcart for this one. I heard rumors of a Hoenn expedition that didn't involve alternate dimensions or Pokemon turning into giant crystals. Just good old-fashioned training. So, I packed my bag—no, not a digital tablet, a real rucksack—and headed in.
First things first: Finally, a hack that respects the classics. I didn't see any weird Digimon-looking things running around. It’s Hoenn, but someone finally turned off the Caps Lock. Thank goodness. Back in my day, everyone shouted at you in text boxes. Now, with this 'Decapitalization' technology, people speak like civilized human beings. It’s the little things.
VISUALS AND ATMOSPHERE
The intel mentioned updated visuals. I was worried they'd try those 3D models that look like plastic toys. Thankfully, the report indicates HGSS sprites. They are crisp. They remind me of the golden era of the DS, which I suppose is retro enough now. The Day and Night system is back, too. It feels just like Johto in the late 90s, watching the sun go down while you're stuck in a forest. It adds a sense of time passing that modern games often forget.
FIELD NOTE: The map has been modified. Don't trust your old Nintendo Power strategy guide. The cities have new layouts. It’s confusing for an old timer, but it keeps the brain sharp.
COMBAT REPORT
They’ve implemented the Physical/Special Split. I used to complain about this, saying Fire Punch should be Special because fire is magic, but... I’ll admit, it makes Hitmonchan actually useful. The difficulty is definitely spiked. The Gym Leaders aren't just sitting there waiting to hand you a badge; they actually switch their Pokemon. Imagine that! Hostile entities proved extremely dangerous.
I noticed the Ice type feels different. Sturdier. They say it's been 'balanced'. No gimmicks, just good Pokemon. Making an Ice chunk not shatter when a Fighting type looks at it funny is a change I can get behind.
THE ANOMALIES
There is a National Dex event early on. I usually hate being flooded with too many critters—I can barely remember the first 151—but seeing a wider variety didn't hurt. The Infinite Move Tutors are a blessing for my arthritis. I don't have the patience to grind for Heart Scales like I did in 2005.
However, I did notice the trade system has been overhauled. I miss the days of linking up with a cable, but since nobody plays outside anymore, I suppose changing the in-game trades is necessary.
FINAL THOUGHTS
This expedition was refreshing. It didn't try to reinvent the wheel; it just put some new tires on the old truck. It’s a perfect Vanilla+ experience for those of us who want Hoenn without the headache of modern hand-holding or over-complicated plotlines about saving the multiverse. Just let me beat the Elite Four and retire in peace.
