MISSION LOG: REGION 411-ALT (ALTERED KANTO)
Status: HYPER-FIXATED.
Pokedex Count: 411/411 (Regional).
Sleep Deprivation Level: Critical.
I have returned from the AlteRed sector. My hands are still shaking. Do you know what it’s like to encounter a Charizard that resists Water? Do you know the panic of throwing a Pokeball at a Diglett only to realize it’s levitating and made of clouds? This isn't just a region; it's a biological anomaly. My completionist cortex is lighting up like a Christmas tree.
THE FAUNA: 411 NEW VARIABLES
The primary objective here was the cataloging of 411 "Alter Forms." These aren't just palette swaps; they are complete type and stat overhauls. The biodiversity is staggering. I spent four hours in Viridian Forest because the Caterpie line has been replaced by... something else entirely. Every encounter is a pop quiz where the answer is never what you expect.
From a collection standpoint, this is nirvana. The developers understood the assignment. Living Dex is possible without cheats. I didn't have to touch a single Gameshark code to fill the box. Every single entity, from the starters to the legends, is obtainable within the game files. If I see an empty slot, I panic. Here? No panic. Just the sweet, sweet dopamine of a full grid.
LOGISTICS AND INFRASTRUCTURE (QoL)
The local technology puts standard Kanto to shame. I walked into a Pokemon Center, went upstairs, and found a Move Relearner, Name Rater, and Move Deleter all sitting there, free of charge. No heart scales required? No grinding for Mushrooms? Huge W. This streamlines the optimization process significantly. When you're trying to build a competitive team out of creatures you've never seen before, having instant access to their move pool is essential.
FIELD NOTE: The Physical/Special split is active, but the HUD lacks the icons to tell you which is which. You have to memorize the move properties or check the summary screen obsessively. My spreadsheet got a workout.
THE HUNT
The difficulty curve has been adjusted. It's not Kaizo-level sadism, but the Gym Leaders use strategies that caught me off guard, mostly because I didn't know what type their Ace was until it one-shot me. However, the catch rates feel fair. I didn't have to paralyze a Rattata-equivalent down to 1 HP just to keep it in a ball.
Trade evolutions have been patched out or modified. I didn't find a specific "Link Cable" item per se, but the evolution methods are altered to be self-sufficient. I evolved my trade-mons through level-up or stones found in the field. No friends required. Perfect for a solo operative.
POST-EXPEDITION ANALYSIS
The map is familiar yet distorted—paths are changed, towns have different layouts. It keeps you on your toes. 100% completion took me 62 hours. That includes hunting down the elusive legendaries and figuring out the new type matchups through trial and error (mostly error). The post-game exists and offers enough content to satisfy the itch, though it largely revolves around finishing that massive 411-count Dex.
FINAL VERDICT
Pokemon AlteRed is a fever dream for the completionist. It takes the familiar comfort food of FireRed and seasons it with hallucinogens. If you are obsessed with filling bars to 100% and love the discovery phase of a new generation, this is mandatory.
