ARRIVAL: THE MUSHROOM... KANTO?
Touchdown in Sector 1.3. The atmosphere is... confusing. The geography screams KantoโI recognize the layout of Pallet Town instantlyโbut the bio-readings are off the charts. I stepped into Route 1 and was immediately assaulted by a Goomba. My Pokedex is screaming at me. 150 new entries? 150 slots to fill. I need coffee. I need Repels. I need to know if Bowser is a trade evolution immediately or I am going to have a panic attack.
THE FAUNA: 150 ANOMALIES
The local wildlife has been completely terraformed. We aren't catching pocket monsters; we are conscripting the Koopa Troop. The sprite work is... distinct. Itโs a total ecological replacement. Pidgeys are Lakitus. Rattatas are Goombas. Itโs a fever dream.
NOTE: Do not approach the tall grass at night. The Hammer Bros have high encounter rates and they do not miss.
I spent four hours mapping the spawn tables. The good news? The distribution is logical. You want aquatic enemies? Go to the water. You want ghosts? Lavender Town. My anxiety about missing a slot is slowly subsiding, but the lack of documentation is making my eye twitch. I have a spreadsheet for Hidden Grotto locations and I'm not afraid to use it, but here? I'm flying blind.
QUALITY OF LIFE: PRIMITIVE TECH
Let's talk logistics. This is a FireRed base, and it feels like it. The interface is dated. I tried to check for a physical/special split and got nothing. However, for a completionist, there is one feature that saves this entire expedition from being a 0/10.
I raided the Celadon shops looking for evolution items. Link Cable item is available in Department Store. Huge W. I repeat, trade evolutions are patched via item. I can evolve my Magikoopa without needing to establish a comms link with another explorer. If this wasn't included, I would have extracted immediately.
THE ENDGAME: SHORT BUT SWEET
100% completion took me 25 hours. It's a short expedition compared to the Unbound sector, mostly because the Pokedex is capped at the original 151 count, just reskinned. There is no massive post-game expansion, no Battle Frontier to lose your sanity in. It is a linear collection marathon.
Missable event warning! Save before entering the cave. The entity replacing Mewtwo (a certain villainous King) does not respawn if you knock it out. I learned this the hard way and had to roll back my save file 45 minutes. Unacceptable stress levels.
VERDICT
Living Dex is possible without cheats. That is the only metric that matters to me. It's a novelty trip, a fun diversion for the obsessive collector who wants to see Mario sprites in a Pokemon engine. But don't expect deep mechanics.
