"Bored of the same old 8 Gyms? Lyra recommends 4 unique ROM hacks that completely change the gameplay genre. Auto-chess, dungeon crawlers, and space operas."

"Oh look, another Kanto remake..."

I get it! You've played FireRed. You've played the "Hard" FireRed. You've played the "Open World" FireRed. You want something that surprises you.

The beauty of ROM hacking is that sometimes, creators break the engine so hard it becomes a different genre. Here are 4 games to play when you are sick of collecting 8 badges.

1. Pokemon Crown (The Auto-Chess RPG)

Vibe: Medieval Fantasy | Engine: FireRed

This... this isn't turn-based combat. It's an auto-battler! Like Teamfight Tactics but with Pokemon. It’s set in a medieval region (Guelder), has zero gym leaders, and feels more like Final Fantasy Tactics than Pokemon. It is weird, and it is wonderful.

2. Pokemon Odyssey (The Dungeon Crawler)

Vibe: Made in Abyss | Engine: FireRed

No gyms. No towns. Just a massive, multi-layered dungeon called the Talos. You descend deeper and deeper, managing resources, fighting for survival. It has an Etrian Odyssey vibe. The story is dark, philosophical, and completely unique.

3. Pokemon Saiph 2 (The Sci-Fi Opera)

Vibe: Space Adventure | Engine: Emerald

Most hacks are "Trainer leaves small town." Saiph 2 starts with you fleeing an exploding space colony. It features the "Vyro" region, a completely original soundtrack, and a plot involving interdimensional travel. It feels like a JRPG from the PS1 era.

4. Super Pokemon Eevee Edition (The Retro RPG)

Vibe: Final Fantasy II | Engine: RPG Maker (XP)

It uses the Gen 2 graphics but the battle system is Active Time Battle (ATB)! You have 4 moves, but your whole party fights at once. It forces you to rewire your entire brain.

If you play one of these, you will remember why you fell in love with fan games in the first place. Creativity usually thrives when you throw the rulebook out the window.
